We will see the brutalist masterpiece- New City Hall & conclude at the Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market area. You might want to shop or get a drink or meal at one of the many restaurants & bars at the end of the tour. I will share recommendations for things to do & places to eat. • Explore Salem's Witch Hysteria & More
Salem is a beautiful, historic city best known for its tragic 'Witch' Trials. Our walk and talk will provide an overview of our history, from our founding in 1626 to the Witch Hysteria of 1692, to the current day, with some sites from Hocus Pocus tossed in. The tour length is 2 hours depending on the interaction and the pace of the group, and we'll cover about 2 1/2 miles. As a resident, I can share a local perspective to help bring Salem alive for you and help with any tips that may make your visit more enjoyable. Our tour is historical, but I will sprinkle in a few legends and hauntings along the way. If the dates/times of the tour posted do not work for you, drop me a note and I will try to accommodate your travel plans. Just for fun, tours offered at night will include some 'ghosty' kind of stuff as well. I realize not every guest has the mobility for a tour this long with no seating options. If you'd prefer a shorter tour with less walking, let me know and I'll try to make it work.

  • Bloodlust: Mysteries of Victorian Boston
In the late 1800s, Boston experienced a rash of gruesome murders and unexplained phenomena. The “Boston Medical and Surgical Journal” observed, “The increase in the number of the criminally insane has been exceptionally rapid…” Most interesting was the way one community reacted to this – The South End, the country’s oldest and largest Victorian neighborhood. Not only was there a reawakening of the notorious Witchcraft Trials that happened 200 years earlier, but people were also accused of being vampires and conversing with the dead – all while serial murders and molesters lurked just out of sight. Explore this quaint post-Civil War suburb, its architectural gems and strange statuary that tourist rarely get to see. Then delve into the concerns of the people who lived here, their art, science, politics and stories of true crime, with demonstrations on Victorian phantasmagoria and the new fields of forensics and toxicology. Did you know that one of Boston’s wealthiest entrepreneurs was a woman? So was America’s first accused vampire. We’ve also hosted mad scientists, homicidal healthcare workers and psychologists who treated the mentally ill in unsavory ways. Buried the beneath this neighborhood's eye-catching English gardens and breathtaking brick rowhouses is a unique experience you won’t want to miss, and all within a few blocks of Copley Square and Back Bay. Other things to note We will walk outside, about a mile, through the streets and parks of the South End. We will see architecturally significant homes and churches, the background for a number of historic movie and shows. There will be some graphic discussion of violence and murder. Participant discretion is advised.

Other things to note Please arrive at the white-columned entrance to the Harvard Coop bookstore, 1400 Massachusetts Ave., between 7:15-7:25 so you can check in with your guide before the tour departs at 7:30.

  • Sail on the Schooner Fame of Salem
Haul up the sails! Take the tiller! Or just chill out with a Rum Punch or Deacon Stormy while our historic schooner slides through Salem Sound past lighthouses, forts, and waterfront homes. The captain and crew will explain the significance of the FAME, privateering, and the War of 1812. The firing of the cannon is always a highlight! We'll motor out from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem and then call for volunteers to help raise the sails. Once the sails are up, depending on the wind, we may shape a course toward Beverly... or Marblehead... or head straight out toward the islands! Our interactive crew point out landmarks, explain the operation of the schooner, and mix drinks with equal facility! The sails last roughly an hour and forty-five minutes. When we return to Pickering Wharf, you're right in the heart of downtown Salem — perfectly placed for a meal, a drink, or a stroll! Other things to note We will not sail if steady rain, high winds, or thick fog are expected. Call ahead if you are unsure about the weather. Dress for the weather — you are exposed to the elements on our 1812 schooner! This is not a cruise ship! This trip is not appropriate for infants or toddlers. But once kids are 4-5 years old, they really enjoy it!
