Vad du kommer att göra
An hour’s drive to the west of Pondicherry, past the Ousteri Lake lies the National Fossil-wood Park of Thiruvakkarai. Not many people would have heard of it and yet, it is considered a rare geological wonder. Follow me as I take you to the Miocene Epoch - 23 million years back in the history of the Earth. A time when our anthropoidal ancestors were only beginning to appear, and modern human beings were a long time in coming! As we walk around the Park, we’ll try and visualize what the landscape must have been like when the process of petrifaction (fossilization) began 20 million years ago; discuss the catastrophic events that must have taken place in the region to turn an entire forest into fossil wood. Other than the 200 fossilized trees in the park precinct, there are is evidence of recent human activity in the form of a few megalithic burial sites, or commemorative memorials. They are from a very ‘recent’ era - a mere 1000 BC! On the drive back to the city, we can stop by Ousteri Lake and do a spot of bird-watching. In winter this shallow and placid water-body is host to hordes of water fowls, including flamingos.
An engineer by profession, I've worked in remote mines, tramped all over the Himalayas, worked in design studios, taught in architecture schools and dabbled in painting before turning my attention to tourism. A chance opportunity in Rajasthan, when I had to stand in for the official tour guide - narrating the history of Chittorgarh fort and the legendary Rajput clan, I realized how interesting history can be; much of it depending on how it is conveyed. Through anecdotes and folklore, it was a brilliant experience telling people about it. Steeped in history, there is a lot more to Pondicherry than meets the eye! Away from the mainstream tourist attractions are places where once well-trodden paths lie covered in weeds and every cobblestone has a unique story to tell. It is this dimension of Pondicherry that I wish to reveal to my guests.

Var ni kommer att vara
Tiruvakkarai is a half day excursion from Pondicherry. The guided, walking tour is at a geological heritage site that takes approximately 1 hour to reach by road from Pondicherry. The duration of the walk is 90 minutes, and is on undulating ground that requires very little effort. However, it is not wheelchair friendly. The site is fairly rich in bird life, and if your luck is in you’ll get to see the enigmatic Indian Paradise Flycatcher.
