Vad du kommer att göra
OUR SCHEDULE 10am Refreshments: coffee/tea, soft drinks, homemade cakes Introduction the historic landscape: Learn about the Friary site of The Hinton Charterhouse Monastery, where the lay brothers farmed from 1232, including the study of archaeological maps showing the outline of buildings which formed a village, now almost entirely below the ground. We will discuss the variety of skills that the monks used for their day-to-day survival and the flora and fauna locally that they depended upon with special reference to medicinal herbs. In medieval times, people depended upon herbalism and the monks had more advanced knowledge of medicines and rudimentary pharmacology. 11am Try your hand at coppicing, dry stone walling and foraging. Learn about the fish stocks the monks depended upon, especially carp, and how they tended the river banks, including the willow, that was so useful domestically. See examples of willow fence work, hazel hurdles and wool woven upon a hand loom. 12.15pm Luncheon: home-made vegetarian sandwiches and soup with gluten- free pudding 1pm Walk to medieval Farleigh Hungerford Castle , with its fascinating and explosive family history, along an ancient drovers' route following the River Frome 2.30pm Return via Iford Manor, a beautiful Georgian manor house with Italianate gardens 3.30pm Traditional English cream tea at Friary
I organise the teaching of Traditional Rural Skills on a Scheduled Ancient Monument Site just outside the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath. My background is in farming, but I also have a science and a law degree. I have run this LANTRA-registered project for 2 years, with the advice of skilled tutors and craftsmen, and we have immersed ourselves in the history of the Carthusian monks who lived here hundreds of years ago, learning especially about the skills that they used daily to survive. These include: tree-coppicing; dry stone walling; sustainable bee-keeping; willow weaving; and herbalism. Our Airbnb Super-host and AA-5 star rated accommodation, which we have run for over 10 years, offers additional activities such as: foraging; fishing; and nature-aware riverside walks to a medieval castle and an historic manor house.
