CURRENTLY WE ARE IN LONELY PLANET TOP 6 FORAGING DESTINATIONS IN THE US, and featured in the LA Times, SF Gate, Sunset, and Eating Well. All along the pristine coast of Central California, many species of delicious edible seaweeds exist. Kelp is some of the most tasty and nutritious of wild superfoods! I will meet participants and take them to seldom visited local spots and teach them basic phycology (marine algae science) and sustainable harvesting techniques. Not only will participants partake in a unique experience surrounded by breathtaking scenery, but they will leave with the knowledge of how to sustainably harvest nutritious seaweed for themselves for years to come. We make an amazing seaweed Ramen in the traditional Japanese form at the end.

I WILL SEND YOU EXACT LOCATION AFTER BOOKING > We will be harvesting edible seaweed. Unlike land foraging, there are no toxic seaweeds to worry about. We will show you how to tide pool with minimal impact upon the marine environment.

I've spent the vast majority of my 39 years in a close relationship with the ocean. Harvesting and eating seaweed is my passion that I will share with you as the guide of these amazing family friendly intertidal adventures. I especially love passing down harvesting knowledge to my own children and the next generation of foragers. I started off as an edible kelp harvester and also sell my fresh and dried product at farmer's markets. I also make a killer seaweed forager's ramen. I've been the foreman of aquaculture facilities such as the Morro Bay Oyster Company and a licensed commercial salmon fisherman and like to think I've become more sustainable as I age. Var ni kommer att vara

We will meet at Estero Bluffs State Park a few miles north of Cayucos, CA. From there we will travel to one of several large tidepool areas between Estero Bluffs and Ragged Point, near southern Big Sur. No matter what tide is present there will always be edible seaweed available for participants to enjoy. We also are usually lucky enough to see many marine mammals and creatures that inhabit the intertidal ecosystem

This tour was absolutely wonderful. Spencer is very knowledgeable, loves what he’s doing, and genuinely wanted to connect with the guests on the tour. I highly recommend this tour if you are at all interested in foraging, the ocean, or just want to spend a Saturday morning outside amongst good company!

Spencer was an excellent teacher and guide! We really enjoyed getting to try nori and ogo straight off of a rock, and learning how to tell the difference between kombu and its not-so-tasty doppelganger. Beach ramen with foraged seaweed was the perfect way to end the tour.

Such an wonderful introduction to a totally new culinary experience! Spencer was a knowledgeable and fun host - and his ramen noodle lunch was unexpectedly delicious. I highly recommend this tour.

What a magical day we spent with Spencer! He's a wealth of knowledge and we learned so much, and also gave us so much information to continue to explore and enjoy the coast. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something a little different, and a new way to explore the beach or learn about local food and sustainability. We had a group of from Portland, Miami and Paso Robles and we all learned something!

Amazing experience! The conditions could not have been better. Spencer is amazingly knowledgeable and his delivery is informative without being overwhelming to the participants. The conservation aspect was very interesting as was the history of seaweed harvesting on the coast of California. We had exceptional weather, which was a plus, but even in foggier conditions, I can only imagine the ramen would have been even more delicious!

Our foraging experience was almost magical because the evening was just so beautiful- a perfect central coast fall day. Spencer is a wonderful guide, I was impressed with how naturally he engaged with people of all ages and was able to give personal attention to all 8 of us. He gave interesting information about the science, history, and uses of seaweeds, and as others have said, in an easily learned way. (Unlike last year when I tried to teach myself to forage seaweed with 3 books from the library and ended up saying… ugh this is too hard!) Pro tip- Try to stay near him though, I fell behind trying not to slip and die or step on any sea creatures and I know I missed some good info because I couldn’t hear him over the wind and waves. The rustic beach-made ramen at the end makes this a really fun and delicious experience for all ages.

(Not essential for experience) If you want to harvest up to10lbs of seaweed and you are over 16 years of age you need a valid California Fishing License.
Cooler to transport your seaweed home (f you wish, not necessary for the experience)
