Vad du kommer att göra

Queer History at Historic Center Landmarks & Gay Bar Row

In this part, Part 2 of 4 of the Gay History experience, you'll learn about our LGBT history at the 16th century city's edges in the Historic Center.

We will be at the only openly LGBT monument in town & at the subway's gayest station. At Spain's gay poet García-Lorca's bust we will learn of his frustrated visit, of crimes against humanity & of a Mexican diplomat who saved thousands from the Nazis.

We will go to the Spanish Inquisition's burning grounds for sodomites & to the place where drugs were introduced into the LGBT community & discover the life of an American gay writer in an old cantina.

Along the way, you will see our top LGBT symbol, stroll by the site of Latin America's 1st equal marriage & the Old Asylum, where lesbians were locked-up along the mentally ill, centuries ago.

The biggest present of the gay community for the city will line the way as we visit the famous "meeting point" & the "postal cruising grounds" across from the Museum of Art, where you will hear of a gay man in space.

"Drag Queens' Paradise" & the LGBT-driven founding of the Human Rights Commission will mark the entrance to "Gay Bar Row" where a couple of dozen bars thrive & set trends.

After guiding you to these & more surprises we will show you the way to the main cruising street, around which, Part 3 revolves, booked separately.

For decades as a hobby & then as a professional activity, I have researched & shared the history of diversity that has been forgotten, left hidden or in the closet for most of its parts to help advance the fight for equality.

I have earned my National Tour Guide License & also a Hosting Diploma by Walt Disney University in Florida. My curated & focused walks showcase Women's, Indigenous, LGBT, Jewish, US American & other diverse sides of history in Mexico at its relevant sites.

I thrive to show our vast history, arts & traditions; from Mexico before Mexico & its founding in 1325 A.D., to date; not in a boring way but in one that I expect may amuse you.

I share the stories from the diverse communities that shaped us at places where it happened. Malinche, Luis Carvajal, Sor Juana, Salvador Novo, Frida Kahlo & Robert Brady are part of it.

Var ni kommer att vara

During the 3.5 hour walk, we will visit Alameda Park's LGBT-related corners, the rainbow crosswalk, the Juárez memorial & complex & Chinatown. Past the Palace of Bellas Artes we will arrive at Tolsá Plaza & the Museum of Art. Before heading to the Historic Center's Gay Bar Row we will see the city's legislature & its official theatre. All of this happens at the old city limits between the former convents of San Diego & the Immaculate Conception.

This is an extensive insight to gay history - centuries of persecution giving way to Mexico's preeminent position as the leader of LGBT rights in Latin America. Carlos has a lot of dishy tales to share along with 19th and 20th century Mexican history in total. He's generous with his time and at the end of Part II, you'll know exactly where to pursue your own explorations of gay life in the city (wink wink).

Carlos's gay city tour is fun, appealing, and highly informative. He's a relaxed and confident pro. This was my second tour with him (I took Part I), and once again I left feeling pleased, satisfied, and far more in the know. I highly recommend Carlos!

Carlos is an excellent guide. He has been giving tours full time for 5 years, so he is very knowledgeable about his topic. I learned a lot about Mexican history during my tour. Carlos made my experience extra special, as I was the only client!

Carlos was incredibly knowledgeable and personable; four hours together flew by, and his insights into the community and how it operated historically and how it thrives today, is incredible. He knows practically everyone and has personal anecdotes that make the discussion that much more real. He also knows all the hot spots and is happy to give recommendations freely. If we had more time in Mexico City we’d do more of his tours, which are listed on his website. Also, he is incredibly professional and chooses, as he says, to charge a proper wage rather than a low ticket price and rely on tips. Overall, he’s a great person and a truly lovely guide - I highly recommend taking his tours.
