Casa Romero: a pretty village house, with parking nearby, in the 'pueblo blanco' of Gaucín. With a plunge pool and wonderful views, its traditional character offers modern comfort, including fans for summer, a woodburner and heating, wifi, a large screen for viewing dvds/playing games, cosy sofas, plenty of books to read, a sweet little garden filled with scented plants and a sunny roof terrace for alfresco dining and relaxing. Pure cotton sheets and towels. Cot and high chair available.

Boendet
Casa Romero has fabulous views from the roof terrace, south past the Rock of Gibraltar to Africa and west to our local mountain, El Hacho and east to the castle. The house has accommodation for four people plus a baby, with a solar heated plunge pool in the ground floor courtyard. There is parking nearby in the street behind the house. Casa Romero is available for rent throughout the year, and each season has its own special magic.

Come and enjoy the winter sunshine. We do get some days of mist and rain, but sun and blue skies are the norm. Casa Romero is unusual in Gaucin because it has central heating, powered by the wood-burning stove. We provide one huge free basket of firewood and you can buy more if you need it (for €15 for a full basket). Snuggle down in front of the fire on the comfortable sofas, and enjoy our extensive book and game collection. Outside, winter is the perfect season for mountain walking, and a great time for visiting towns like Ronda and Seville when they are relatively tourist-free. The village is quiet, with few tourists, but there are still tapas bars and restaurants open. In December the spring flowers begin with tiny narcissi, followed closely by beautiful little blue irises. In February the hillsides are bright with almond blossom and in March the first of the orchids appear. We welcome long-term rental in the winter – please contact us to discuss terms.

Spring at Casa Romero brings warmer weather and now you can start to enjoy alfresco dining on the roof terrace. Still an excellent time for walking, there is also road cycling, mountain biking and horse-riding, and some of the best surfing in Europe is only an hour's drive away at Terifa. Now is the best time of year to see the amazing variety of wild flowers, including orchids, asphodels and cistus. In May the wild paeonies appear in the woods below El Hacho. It is also a good time to enjoy Gaucin’s bird life – the spring migration includes nightingales, cuckoos, bee eaters, and then swallows and swifts which swoop around the roof terrace with their brilliant aerial displays. It is usually warm enough to use the plunge pool by May.

In summer the heat begins in earnest. Spend drowsy days relaxing on the sun loungers and lazing in the hammock on the roof terrace, or cooling off in the plunge pool, which has a fountain and lights for night-time use. Enjoy dining outside in the balmy evenings and taking an evening dip in the pool whilst doing a little star gazing. Gaucin comes to life after dark in the summer, with many village fiestas, the feria, flamenco…

In Autumn it is still warm enough for a dip in the plunge pool (if you keep it covered at night), and to lunch outside. Now the temperature is again perfect for walking: you can mushroom hunt, see the local black pigs rootling for chestnuts and acorns in the woods, and enjoy the autumn migration as the birds set off for their winter quarters.

If you visit with a baby we can install a cot (with bedding) on the landing in the dvd-viewing area. There is also a stair gate if you need it and a high chair. The roof terrace also has a gate, to make this area more secure for children.

In warm months fans are provided in all the main rooms.

The sitting room has three sofas for curling up with a book. There are books throughout the house: modern novels on the landing, travel, biography and mountain books in the sitting room and in the kitchen there are books about Spain, together with holiday reading. There is a selection of games in the sitting room, including the wooden game ‘bau’, which has been played throughout Africa since ancient times and is a bit like backgammon. There is a cosy sofa on the upstairs landing where you can plug in your lap top, using a VGA or HDMI connection, to use the big screen ; there are also cuddly toys and children's books.

The kitchen has a gas oven and hob, a microwave, and a fridge with a freezer compartment for ice. There is a stick blender, a kettle and teapots, and a toaster. There are special plastic glasses for pool-side use. There is a large dining table, comfortable dining chairs and a dresser with a display of antique Crown Derby china.

Upstairs, the double bedroom opens onto the garden which is particularly fragrant at night. There is an extra little table and chairs here if you fancy breakfast next to the rose-scented geraniums. The second bedroom has twin beds. All the beds have bedside tables with lamps. A hairdryer is provided. Both bedrooms have built-in wardrobes with hanging space and drawers.

The bathroom has a bath and a walk-in shower. The first aid kit is under the sink.

The windows and doors are fitted with traditional slatted blinds - locals let them down during the day to keep the hot sun at bay and pull them up to let in the cool air at night. We also use them to keep out the spectacular rainstorms which occur occasionally in autumn and spring.

Upstairs. the roof terrace, with its wonderful views, has dining furniture, sunbeds and a hammock. There is an electric 'plancher' (hot plate) to plug in, which provides an easy modern alternative to a barbecue. There is a gate fitted at the steps, which can be used to make this area secure for children.

The owners are a mountaineer and a ceramicist, and the ambience of the house reflects them: there are amazing photographs of mountains throughout the house, books (including the host's) about mountain journeys and ceramic pieces on the walls and in the garden.

Gästers tillgång
The house is self contained and guests can access all areas. There is one external staircase which is shared with the house next door to allow access to the boiler room.

Andra saker att notera
If your stay is longer than 8 nights we will provide a mid-stay change of bedlinen and towels and a free visit from our cleaner.

We provide pure cotton sheets for coolness. Towels and pool towels are provided, plus bathmat, kitchen hand towel and drying up towel.

If you have a baby we can install a cot (with bedding), a high chair and a stair gate. There is a gate at the roof terrace stairs.

We welcome you with a bottle of cava and packet of the delicious local crisps. We also provide a bottle of water - although you can drink the tap water if you wish.

There is a large affectionate cat called Socks , three little rescue kittens called Felix, Rodriguez and Tacita, and a beautiful friendly lurcher dog called Willow, who live in our house next door. So the house is not suitable for those with allergies to animals.

For a four-week stay, we offer a free night.

During the high-season in summer, we only accept 3 night bookings at the last minute.

Gaucín, Andalucía, Spanien

This is a mountain village in Andalucia and there are wonderful views from our house and the rest of the village, down to the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa. There are fabulous wildflowers here before the summer heat arrives - starting with little narcissi and irises in December, asphodels in February, orchids in March and April and a blaze of assorted wildflowers in May, including peaonies in the woods under our local mountain, El Hacho. The summer is filled with traditional activities: fiestas, the feria, flamenco - or you can relax peacefully on the roof terrace and cool off in the plunge pool. There is fantastic bird watching here, particularly during the spring and autumn migrations. In the spring you can listen to the wonderful nightingales and cuckoos, in summer there are bee-eaters, swifts and swallows and all year there are eagles and majestic vultures. We live surrounded by sheep and goats, and if you are lucky you may see some wild ibex. There are beautiful walks in the cork oak forests and on the mountain slopes, or in the cool of the evening you can join the locals for a relaxing stroll along the road to Jimena - which is pleasantly flat. There are plenty of tapas bars and restaurants in the summer months, and even when everything becomes quieter in the winter, there are always few tapas bars open. On the last weekend of May and the first weekend of June there is Art Gaucin, where local artists, including your host, open their studios to visitors. We are only 40 minutes from the sea and the nearest beach.

I am a ceramacist - I have a studio in my garden in Spain and a studio share when I am in our Edinburgh flat. My husband Stephen is a mountaineer, writer and lecturer. We divide our time between our flat in Edinburgh and our two adjacent houses in the mountains of southern Spain. When we are away from Spain we let one house and our wonderful housesitters in the second house look after things for us. When we are away from Edinburgh, we use an excellent concierge company.

Casa Romero is our holiday house. We live in the house next door with our friendly (usually non-barking) dog and affectionate cat. We are away during the winter and the summer, when we have wonderful house-sitters who look after the garden , the pool and the cat. If we are away, there is a key safe to allow entry when you arrive. When we are away you can contact us by social media, which have free phone lines. We ask that you use the free wifi to let us know everything is all right when you arrive, and we will then be able to telephone you. If you have any problems please don't hesitate to call us or text us. Our house-sitters are right next door if there are any emergencies - you will meet them when they look after the pool. If you would like to use the washing machine, the iron and the ironing board, which are in the boiler room, please ask. We leave details of local walks and various sight-seeing books. There are laminated sheets to explain details in the house.
