“Matter in the wrong place is dirt. People got dirty through too much civilization. Whenever we touch nature, we get clean.” C.G. Jung
Betty’s Bay is located 96 km from Cape Town beneath the Kogelberg mountains. With not a shopping mall in sight for miles. Betty’s Bay is firmly ensconced in nature. The town itself lies in a narrow 13km stretch of land which makes the most of the beautiful ocean and mountain views which surround it. Due to this great location, Betty’s Bay is perfect for many outdoor adventures.
We invite you to come and explore. Follow the R44 coastal route via Gordon’s Bay. This exceptional coastal / mountain drive ranks amongst the most beautiful corniches in the world. As you enter the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, which forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom (a World Heritage site), you are in the world’s hottest ‘hot spot’ of plant diversity and endemism. Pull over into one of the many look-out points along the way and inhale the fresh sea air and the smell of seasonal blossoms in the Fynbos.
Thirty kms along this R44, you will enter Betty’s Bay which lies at the very heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere. Follow the boards to the Penguin Colony and you will reach your destination. The garden of our home is the epitome of the Kogelberg and Stoney point – full of natural rocks and stones!
Drive up the driveway and park in front of your suite. A spacious apartment awaits you with a private bathroom, shower, toilet and washbasin. The fridge, microwave, kettle and all necessary cutlery and crockery allows you to prepare and enjoy your meals independently and in comfort at the table in total privacy.
The beautiful green belt between the house and the sea provides an unobstructed view of the ocean. The absence of street lights allows one the ability to study and enjoy the stars and fully experience the Milky Way. The footpath allows easy access to natural rock pools and a bench where one can sit and observe the returning penguins in the late afternoon after their day of fishing at sea. At low tide the rock pools expose an abundance of life which normally is unseen. Turn over a few rocks in these pools and you will uncover a whole new world of rich sea-life which is so jealously guarded by local residents.
Enjoy a visit to the Penguin Colony and other astoundingly interesting places. Bus-loads of International guests come here to visit. The unique history of what once was a vibrant Whaling Station at the turn of the 19th Century is on display at the local restaurant. A walk along the coastline will allow you to spot remnants of this now forgotten industry. Rusting pieces of what was once a whaling boat jut out of the water and foundations of the equipment used to process the whale oil can still be seen today. The tiny harbour, antique graves and middens lie in wait for those who care to explore a little deeper into this amazing place. The birdlife along the way comes as a complete bonus. The main swimming beach is within walking distance from the house where one can swim and surf safely. A second swimming beach is a mere 3 minute drive away. There are three fresh water lakes where one can swim, fish and row about.
Various nature reserves lie within and around Betty’s Bay. Each one of these hold their own allure, all seated in their natural surroundings. The Harold Porter Botanical Garden is probably the best known and attracts international visitors. This garden is well worth a day visit. Its educationally laid out pathways introduce one to the plants and wildlife of the region. There are numerous benches to sit upon while you meditate or just relax in nature. There are also two clearly defined walking paths within the garden which each culminate at a waterfall. Diza Kloof and Leopard’s Kloof each offer a unique experience. You will not be able to ignore the abundant bird and insect life within this beautiful garden. There is also a good restaurant and nursery near the entrance where one can have a breakfast, light lunch or snack and buy plants for your garden at home.
Photography lovers can’t wish for more than what Betty’s Bay offers. Birds, flowers, sunrises, sunsets and if you are lucky some very special animals. (Ask Van As!) Walking routes along the sea, in the mountains and along the plains all provide the avid photographer (or novice!) with unique opportunities. We can also introduce you to beautiful caves, antique forests and well-hidden natural gems. (Just ask) A visit to the wild horses near Kleinmond is a must!
If you need to replenish your food supply or just enjoy some time shopping, Kleinmond, Hermanus, Somerset West, Pringle Bay and Rooi Els each provide different shopping experiences.
We also offer guests information on walking tours, MTB trails and many more experiences upon request. Videos of experiences in the local environment are available to view at our home. You can also snuggle up with a book. Opportunities for exercise abound and a beautiful environment for meditation (Mindfullness) is here for you to enjoy.
Further afield, but within an easy drive, are many day trips. Whale watching in Hermanus, the Wine routes, either in the Hemel-en-aarde valley or Stellenbosch, a visit to Cape Agulhas (Southern-most tip of Africa), Cape Town (Waterfront, Table mountain), Cape Point and even an historical trip to Robben Island are all within easy reach from our home.
A visit to Betty’s Bay will astound you and create memories you never thought possible. You will leave with photographs, videos, and memories to share with your family for years to come. Your hosts, Van As and Marianna have the experience and skill to assist you in reaching all your goals!
‘In the last analysis, most of our difficulties come from losing contact with our instincts, with the age-old unforgotten wisdom stored up in us.” C.G. Jung
