Andra saker att notera
Quetzaltenango, for obvious reasons, is usually called by its original name Xela (shay la). How then did it go from the simplicity and easily expressed name of Xela to the complex tongue twister Quetzaltenango?

Blame it in the conquistadors in the 1520’s. Although Xela was probably 300 years old by the time Pedro de Alvarado conquered the city for Spain the Wiki article says “he called it by the Nahuatl name used by his Central Mexican Indian allies, Quetzaltenango, generally considered to mean the place of the quetzal bird. Quetzaltenango became the city's official name in colonial times. However, many people (especially the indigenous population) continue to call the city Xelajú or more commonly Xela for short, and some proudly, but unofficially, consider it the capital of the Mayas.”

Suffice to say almost no one calls it Quetzaltenango.

Xela is at the center of Guatemalan action. It’s 200 km from Guatemala City and 95 km from Chichicastenango with its renown market. It’s 77 km from San Marcos La Laguna at the picturesque Lake Atitlán. World travelers who know India and Khao San Road in Bangkok will likely know San Marcos.

Closer by at 20 km are the well-known hot springs Fuentes Georginas where you can enjoy the heat of public pools or private baths in a gorgeous setting.

Also 20 km away is the beautiful Laguna de Chicabal, a fog-shrouded lake high up in the caldera of a volcano. It’s a spiritual site for Mayans.

At 10 km are little developed, rather hidden natural steam-baths quite unknown to tourists and even to most locals. They shall remain a secret except to the most desirous.

For intrepid hikers there’s a lava field about 10 km away…mysterious, intriguing, beautiful, and challenging. It attracts the spiritual.

The crown jewel of overnight hikes is climbing the conic volcano Santa Maria just outside of town. It rises up to 3772 meters (12,375 ft). A hike requires about 1300 meters of elevation gain ( 4265 ft). You can find a Wikipedia article on this magnificent volcano. For the last hundred odd years a small and highly active volcano called Santiaguito has been growing out of its side. Both Santa Maria and Santiaguito are under constant study by vulcanologists.

Of greatest interest to many will be the strong Mayan culture of Xela. Women wear the elegant traditional clothing made up of elaborately woven and embroidered cloth. This cloth of course can be purchased in many places. Alternatively courses are offered to those interested in learning how to weave these highly sought fabrics using traditional looms.

Best of all, perhaps: Xela is found at 2330 meters in elevation (7644 ft) meaning no intense heat, no brutal humidity, and especially no mosquitoes! Yet it has all the advantages of the tropics just 50 km away to the west, namely tropical fruit and tropical beaches.

Casa Descanso is located 3 km from downtown Xela and a few blocks from the popular La Pradera shopping mall with the Walmart supermarket. Nearby are Chinese, Italian and sushi restaurants along with those serving excellent local foods. A modern gym is within 10 minutes walking distance. A 15 minute walk gets you to the city’s largest open-air market where you can find the finest and most extensive range of vegetables, fruits, and legumes…and almost anything else you might want. Next to the market is the chicken-bus terminal for access to any other part of Guatemala. And next to it is MegaPaca, the city’s largest store for used and sometimes new clothing and merchandise, a fun place to browse.

The neighborhood has no safety issues.

I was born and raised on this property, which is an oasis from busy streets of Xela. I lived in Europe for 15 years and in Japan for 5 years. I speak several languages fluently and love to share with people from different cultures.
