My grandmothers Pearl Cohen N. and Barbara Bruff C. would have loved The Square Rigger. These ladies of the Greatest Generation lived their best salt lives to the absolute maximum.
My mother’s mother Pearl was born on the Fourth of July 1908 along the Aegean coastline of Anatolia in Smyrna. Pearl and her mother Regina emigrated from the dissolving Ottoman Empire to America like many of her Ladino folk and leather footrests. Crossing the Atlantic aboard the legendary liner S.S. Martha Washington, one could imagine young Pearl seeing America’s first light of the Montauk Lighthouse. Pearl may have even stopped in Fort Pond Bay, as trans-Atlantic passenger ships often did. Bet she had the lobster roll. Pearl fulfilled the American Dream for so many future influencers.
In 1922, teenager Pearl lived in the NYC melting pot. Around a corner, Barbara Bruff was born to Mary Rose Moore and Colonel Austin Bruff. Barbar missed out on all the Roaring 20s fun. After living the war years in LA, she returned to the Long Island coastlines. Barbar became a pioneer for women real estate brokers. Her efforts created top performing brokerages lasting decades. She shattered glass ceilings and broke new grounds, literally. Through dealing, developing, and naming new lands, Barbar conquered the world of Gold Coast real estate.
Grandma Pearl and Barbar lived and breathed the sea every day. Barbar blessed her family with views of Five Mile River, Pear Tree, and the Long Island Sound. They proved the power of living the salt life, everyday. Pearl’s high-rise views at the end of Lincoln Road shone the sunsets over Biscayne Bay and the moons over Miami. Front-row seats to the freak show.
Barbar and Grandma Pearl would undoubtedly love The Square Rigger, and surely disapprove of the interior design. The world comes together in Montauk. Our family is grateful and we appreciate the opportunity to captain this ship and share their histories. We aim to host everyone like they’re our own grandmother. Through them, we strive to share our stories and inspire you to write your own.
As for myself, I like fishing, Phish, and the Miami Dolphins. I saw Jerry, and I get my kicks out of scuba diving and mountain biking. Bad at golf and surfing, but I keep trying. I’ll kick your ass in tennis. Love meeting fellow travelers, traders, deadheads, and legends. Let’s talk about anything, no politics…and don’t get me started on boomers. One love
