Ultimate guide to whale watching in Cape Town
"Amazing. Isn’t nature just great"
Types of whales you’re likely to spot in South Africa
The southern right whale, humpback whale and the Bryde’s whale are the most commonly sighted on South Africa’s Western Cape coast.
Best places for whale watching in Cape Town
Well, clearly the Atlantic Seaboard is getting its fair share of sightings, but according to the official Cape Town Tourism website, these are the places to be.
False Bay: If you don’t feel like travelling far, there are a few great whale-watching spots near the city of Cape Town. Opt for the higher vantage points along the False Bay coastline such as Cape Point, Boyes Drive between St James and Kalk Bay, and Clarence Drive between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els.
Hermanus: Rated as one of the top 12 whale-watching locations in the world by the World Wildlife Fund, Hermanus offers some fine land-based viewing opportunities because the whales often come within metres of the shoreline.
Cape Agulhus: Up to 50 pairs of southern right cows and calves have been known to frolic in the ocean near the southernmost tip of Africa. The Whale Trail, a five-day hike along the cliffs, dunes, and beaches, gives you a wonderful opportunity to view these mighty mammals and their offspring.
Best time for whale watching
Along the Cape south coast, June to November is a good time, although some will already be as far north as KwaZulu-Natal. Peak calving season is July and August, but whales can be seen through September and October."

Stony Point Penguin Colony | Betty’s Bay
"Stony Point Penguin ColonyStony Point Penguin Colony is one of only two mainland colonies of African Penguin and is reached by the most beautiful coastal route called Clarence Drive. The mountains hug the coast line and photographic opportunities abound.
A fence has been erected around the penguin colony to keep local leopard and other predators at bay.
Bank Cormorant also breed here, alongside the more common Crowned, Cape and White-breasted Cormorants.
Directions: From Cape Town, take the N2 to Somerset West. Turn right onto the R44 and follow to Betty’s Bay. To reach Stony Point, take the sign posted right turn towards the coast, just before you enter Betty’s Bay."

Helderberg Wine Routes, Brandy Routes & Local Breweries Local Information

The Helderberg Wine Route
"The Helderberg Wine Route has in recent years been established as a fully fledged Wined Route and all Wine Producing Farms and Estates in the area proudly participate in the annual Taste the Helderberg Wine Fesitval. This colourful wine route covers the Somerset West area as well as the farms on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain adjacent to the R44 side up to Eikendal and Longridge.
The Helderberg Mountains make their presence felt on all of the wine estates on this route. The scenery and the terroirs are very similar to those found in the Stellenbosch area and some of South Africa’s best known and oldest estates can be found here. The early settlers in Cape Town in the 17th century quickly discovered that this area, with the towering mountains and fertile valleys, was ideal for growing top quality grapes."

"A LABYRINTH OF LITERATURE"
Bikini Beach Books
"The huge cursive sign, Bikini Beach Books so reminiscent of 1950’s America suggests shelves packed with bodice rippers, Westerns, light reading and magazines, but nothing prepares you for what lies beyond those open doorways.
Stepping over the threshold is like slipping into another world where your senses are soothed by soft, haunting music and a sea of books piled on tables, shelves and the floor. Immediately you begin perusing, and before you know it, you find yourself in a narrow passage where book stacks cling precariously to the walls leading you into a labyrinth of literature, poetry, fact and fiction; the range is impressive."
