My family has lived & worked on the island of Barbados for generations. We vacationed on this idyllic south-east coast as children. Seashells, Bel Air, which my sister, Sally Murray & I own, ensures that we can continue our family tradition of gathering & enjoying our, "dreamcatcher haven by the sea", with each other & our friends. Please be assured of the warmest of welcomes. We want your stay to be 'one in a million'! Here's what a recent guest had to say about her month-long stay at "Seashells" : Response from Cecelia: Seashells-Lower: Simple Beauty by the Sea Owner Sally Murray and property manager Lulu Martin have created and maintained a lovely home away from home for travelers to Barbados seeking peace and tranquility. Vibrant flower gardens, native trees, sprawling greenery, and mature aloes surround this paradise treasure. The outdoor property offers daily selections of private and shared spaces. The interior is spacious and cozy with breathable window treatments, a Caribbean color palate, and floors that embrace bare feet. The gentle sea breezes combined with ceiling and floor fans usually provided enough physical comfort on the often-extreme hot days of August when I visited. If you enjoy preparing your own food as an option to eating out, you’ll appreciate the fully functional kitchen. I particularly enjoyed playing my feel good cooking music, opening the French doors leading to the container garden, and picking fresh herbs to place directly in the pots. Seashells wasn’t a disappointment. My ultimate goal of concentrated privacy with a balance of local experiences was achieved and then exceeded by the company of many pleasant local residents. The house rules at first felt daunting. After residing in the home, I understood the rules and found them to be reasonable. Adjusting to some of the practices with windows, doors, garbage, etc. I found would help to maintain this space in pristine condition for all who travel through it. I found myself making additional rules (e.g. no shoes in the house) in order to contribute my share during my month long residence. The gardener, repairman, and housekeeper all worked very hard. A few personal considerations on my part weren’t difficult. Sally has worked very hard to put love in this house. Bring love and leave love. Seashells is most appropriate for individuals who want to be “off the grid”. Local residents affectionately call this region, “Behind God’s Back.” The Crane Resort next door is available for fine dining and formalized activities if you feel stir crazy. However, for a mix of entertainment, choices of dining, and nightlife, a car is definitely needed. Short jaunts to the Crane, nearby deli, and the spots for sea baths are short walks in distance but long Bajan walks in reality. Climate, terrain, sun showers, traffic, and limited sidewalks all have to be considered during walks. For these jaunts, I found a bicycle very helpful. WOMAN-TO-WOMAN: Solo Travel off the Grid Barbados Cycling Whether a “cruiser” leisurely enjoying the sites or a seasoned athlete, the relatively flat terrain of St. Philips Parish can offer many hours of joyful cycling. I found trips that began after sunrise and ended by noon, before the intense heat of the day, to be filled with splendor. Research the laws for bicycle licensing in Barbados and then decide what procedure fits your individual needs. Renting, purchasing, and or bringing your own bicycle and helmet are all options. Remember the rules of the road. Ride on the left side. Avoid rush hour travel on major roads. There aren’t bike lanes. In my experience, car drivers on local roads were always accommodating to my bike. I didn’t notice many women cyclist. I found it useful to wear a mini dress over my technical athletic shorts. It is what it is. I appreciated recognition that I was a “woman on the road.” I’m as feminist as the next, but I had no problem with the frequent and sincere, “Be safe on the road Sweetie.” Once a gentleman noticed my wobbly handlebar, which forced me to stop on the side of the road. He pulled his car over, took a wrench out of his trunk, and graciously helped me. Self-Care Bring self-care items from home that you know work for your body. In local areas, grooming products for hair, skin, and nails may be sparse, or expensive. Make a conscious decision about sunblock. Barbados is very close to the equator. Although, it may at first feel very liberating to expose as much skin as possible, there are consequences to overexposure. These consequences can extend beyond skin burn to heat exhaustion, and sunstroke. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE. A collection of headgear (scarfs, hats, visors) can help maintain comfort while feeling fashionable. Men Women are women. Men are men. Bring whatever good sensibilities you use in your home country with you to Barbados. Safety first. Emergencies Have an emergency plan in place. You may want to consider the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, a division of the U.S. state department for American citizens. Yes, you relinquish some privacy when you inform the state department of your travel plans. They know anyway. However, in the event of an emergency, being enrolled in this program may expedite getting help. I haven’t used this service but I may consider it for future extended (website hidden) Citizenship Leave a bit of your healthy beautiful self before you depart. The possibilities are endless; random acts of kindness, or a beach cleanup. Consider a small act that will contribute to another woman’s health, well-being or freedom. A notebook, extra sandals, non-perishable food may be a small gesture with tremendous positive consequences. Pleasant journey, Cesi From Bridgetown, Barbados · September 2015
