The best description of of the space and the experience is this review from a guest in January 2018: "The pictures don’t really do the place justice—high ceilings, tons of light, yet very cozy. We were there during a cold snap (-20F) and had no problems staying warm. All week you will be tempted to pull books off the many shelves and browse. The other thing that bears mentioning is that Lake Willoughby is beautiful, and the area is stunning. Very glad we chose this spot for our trip."

Here's my description as the property owner: The house has lots of room for a family and their friends - you can sleep 8 comfortably, 9 if you count the downstairs bedroom with one single bed. The house is on four private acres, not visible from the road. It's also surrounded by 180 acres of private family land, fields and forest, so all kinds of interesting animals can be seen, from wild turkeys and a million kinds of birds (I once saw a Giant Snowy Owl in the driveway, looking at me as if I was intruding), to deer and fox. The biggest attraction is Lake Willoughby and the surrounding mountains. They call it the Lake Lucerne of America because it was formed by a melting glacier, and it's lined on both sides by sheer rock cliffs. Robert Frost used to camp out on the field next door to the house and write in solitude; he was apparently a friend of my great grandmother, Nana Myers, who had a dairy farm here in the early part of the last century.

The house, designed by my dad, features tall windows across the whole front of the house. This not only makes most of the house feel sunny and bright, but also you get a wonderful view of nature that is incredibly relaxing. The passive solar design also provides much of the heat in winter months. In addition, 100% of the electricity from the local utility comes from either clean hydro and wind.

When you're in the living room, or one of the bedrooms upstairs, the views are beautiful - lush green in spring and summer, brilliant foliage in the fall, stark whites in the winter. With Mount Wheeler in the distance.

The house is full of books, particularly the master bedroom that doubles as a library and study. Guests have described staying here as peaceful and relaxing, but also an intellectual experience thanks to the wide range of books on every imaginable topic.

The combination of all the books, and being surrounded by nature, has a very relaxing effect. You find yourself napping a lot. Guests have also reported that they feel the love of our family all around them, reflected in the photos and portraits, the various knick-knacks from world travels, and the general vibe of the place.

The house has been updated with a new convection kitchen stove, microwave, dryer, dishwasher, living room furniture (I love the comfy leather recliner), and new wide screen HD TV with sound bar and wireless subwoofer. We cut the cord with the cable company and rely on streaming video (the wifi, to be honest, is not very reliable - I have the best you can buy in Westmore and that's not saying much).

The oak hardwood floors on the first floor were refinished in 2017 and look like new, with a rich honey color. In the living room there is a vintage stereo system with a 70's era turntable, Olm L speakers, and a ragtag collection of LPs that include everything from classical music to Perry Como dance favorites. The amp/tuner (which is modern) allows you to connect to your smart phone to stream music from your playlists or Spotify/Pandora (via your account).

Not everything in the house is perfect. The greenhouse in front of the house is not currently being used; our hope is to turn the greenhouse into a sun room with a hot tub down the road

This part of Vermont (the Northeast Kingdom) has many fields and farms, which is great but an unfortunate offshoot of all this nature is that in the fall months there can be house flies that cluster in some of the windows. I don't know why, but they tend to just buzz around at the base of some of the windows, versus flying around the room. This kind of fly is not unique to our house - it's common in ALL houses in Northern Vermont. We use fly traps to control them and these are replaced before guests arrive. We have chosen not to use chemicals to control them, mostly because they don't work and also because we don't want to be around pesticides and neither do our guests.

One other natural phenomenon common in this neck of the woods is that cobwebs can return within hours of being removed by our wonderful cleaning lady. We have the house thoroughly cleaned after each rental but occasionally cobwebs will spring back and there's nothing we can do. Neither my family or guests here have ever found them to be intrusive.

In the winter months, the back downstairs bedroom can be cool to cold (it's the older part of the house and not as well insulated). We have a space heater there that helps.

Gästers tillgång
Guests have access to the whole house and property with the exception of the greenhouse, which is used by the owners for storage.

Andra saker att notera
Robert Frost, when he was a young and relatively undiscovered poet, asked my great grandmother, Nana, if he could camp out in her field on Willoughby Farm, which is the large meadow just north of our house. Frost references Lake Willoughby in several of his poems.

The house previously belonged to my parents. My dad was a WWII veteran who was dive bombed by Kamikazes at the battle of Okinawa; he devoted much of his life towards finding ways to bring about world peace. In his honor, we have a guest book that we call the "peace book" where our guests can share their thoughts about peace.

The kitchen is big with lots of counter space for cooking.

Westmore, Vermont, USA

The house is in Westmore, which is a very small town without what you'd call a "center." There is a church and general store down the road. Our place is equidistant to Mount Burke and Jay Peak for skiing. About a 35 to 45 minute drive to both. It's also the same distance to the Kingdom Trails mountain biking area, which is fantastic. The biggest lure here is Lake Willoughby, which in 2015 was ranked by the Boston Globe as the best lake for kayaking in all of New England. The cliffs of Mt. Pisgah along the lake are popular with ice climbers in winter. There's also great swimming in the incredibly clear (and usually quite cool) water. For hikers, there are several great mountains right in town. Mt. Westmore (the biggest), Mount Pisgah, Mt. Hor, and Mt. Wheeler. The property is about a 40 minute drive to Greensboro Bend, home to the Hill Farmstead brewery (repeatedly ranked as the best damn beer in the world), and Jasper Hill Farms, makers of artisanal cheese that reminds you there is a God. The south end of the lake has its very own nude beach area tucked into the woods, if that's your fancy. There is a Hill Farmstead growler at the house you are welcome to use so long as you clean it for the next guests.

My wife and I are empty nesters and (gasp) grandparents as of September 2014. While we live just outside Boston, we have deep Vermont roots, so we're up at our house at Lake Willoughby as often as we can be, which is not too often given that our daughter and grandson are in New York. We love hiking, snow shoeing, skiing, mountain biking, swimming in Lake Willoughby, and just about anything else you can do outdoors in this corner of Vermont they call the Northeast Kingdom. We also like to kick back with a good book, or bomb around the countryside eating at funky old diners and shopping for antiques. We also enjoy travel to other countries like England and Italy. Our hope for this house is that it will be enjoyed by families and their close friends, and treated with the kind of respect they would have for their own home.

A local caretaker will get the house open for you and make sure you are all set. I usually spend time with potential renters on the phone so I can learn about them and they can hear directly from me to answer questions, and I always provide my phone so I can be reached while they are at the house. But the local caretaker is the main point of contact once someone is in Westmore. The caretaker makes arrangements with guests so they know how to get into the house.
