Husregler
Det här boendet är inte lämpligt för barn under 12 år och värden tillåter inte husdjur, fester eller rökning.
This is a sunny, extra large room with tall gabled ceilings, lots of light, and beautiful surrounding greenery. This charming, historic William Morris style home was designed by noted Bay Area architect John Hudson Thomas in 1927 for deans at nearby Mills College deans.

This is a spacious sanctuary in a semi-urban setting with lots of trees.

Boendet
This is a room fit for a prince or a princess!

The ultra spacious room is designed with soaring ceilings and generous windows from light on three sides.

This room is for one person only.

You enter from the second floor hallway, passing through a Hobbit style peaked door to go into the room.

The room itself is L shaped and measures 12 x 12 in the main part with an additional area that measures 8 x 8.

Each window looks out at trees and greenery.

The shared bath - with tub and shower, etc. - is just 2 steps away, down the hall.

The room is spectacular - charming, bright and airy, and quite lovely.

This house (and room) are a doll's house version of the famed architect's own house which is in Kensington (California).

Your bed is furnished with high quality linens, cotton quilts and comforters and a down comforter (real down).

The room also comes equipped with food and drink amenities including a compact refrigerator (with tiny freezer), electric kettle, toaster, and microwave so you can make toast or coffee/tea or heat up takeout. You could also heat up soups or microwave meals.

The room also comes with tea and coffee utensils for you to use along with English muffins, butter (dairy or organic vegan), organic yogurt and organic jam for a simple, continental style breakfast.

There are also many takeout and delivery options nearby and a Thai restaurant within walking distance. Some guests have used their favorite organic grocery delivery place - Good Eggs. Instacart also delivers from Safeway and Amazon from Whole Foods.

The shared bathroom is a few steps away from the room - and features charming gabled ceilings, shower curtain and white vintage tile. Free shampoos - including organic olive oil shampoo and DocBronner's - are provided.

We put little surprise treats in your frig, and chocolates by your bedside. Come and see!

The room is a welcoming place to stay.

Gästers tillgång
Access is limited to the front hall, stairs, and bathroom.

Kitchen and dining room access are private areas that guests may not enter (due to Airbnb regulations).

Guests may not enter or view our other private areas.

IN ROOM AMENITIES
While we do not share our kitchen, we do provide a lot of in room amenities - including microwave, toaster, electric kettle, dishes and silverware plus coffee and tea, creamers, and honey. You'll also find bedside chocolates to provide pleasure and a homey touch!

OUTDOORS

Guests are invited to share the outdoor table area, as long as they enjoy and partner in the peace and quiet treasured by those of us who live here and our neighbors. The greenery on the grounds creates a relaxing and woodsy environment.

BATHROOM

Due to Airbnb's Covid cleaning requirements, we need to ask guests to help keep our bathroom super clean. That means "leave no trace." Although we clean daily, we also need guests to help, too. We will explain when you arrive how to do that. It's obvious stuff that only takes 1-2 minutes to do.

CLEANING PRODUCTS

We use Puretergent's nontoxic all purpose cleaner along with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide. (Julia Fry, Puretergent's founder, is a friend and neighbor). We also use soap powder. We are trying to use microfiber cloths to reduce the amount of paper towels used.

SCENTED PRODUCTS

We discourage the use of scented products, but we realize that many guests travel with them, so we understand. But if you can apply perfumes, etc. off the premises, we will appreciate it. The scented products tend to be toxic. (See the book Count Down for more info or the EWG website for more details). Also, since your host is a wine writer, scented products interfere with work!

FOOD OPTIONS

--WITHOUT A CAR - OPTIONS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE

For those without cars, there is a local Thai restaurant within walking distance.

There is also the Laurel District on the north side of Mills College. (We are on the south side of Mills College, about a 20 minute walk from the north side).

On the north side of the campus, there are many options.
• an independent coffee shop
• several neighborhood restaurants - everything from Oakland BBQ (Everett and Jones) to Communité table (a farm to table takeout place with organic salads and very popular fried chicken), a wood fired pizza place (Fist of Flour Doughjo), and a gas station with a sushi restaurant inside. (The second generation of this Asian family runs the sushi place, while the parents run the gas station).

DELIVERY OPTIONS

There are also PLENTY of delivery options. Sparky's Burgers (run by a local Asian family), Shake Shack, Ethiopian food, Cambodian food - you name it, Oakland's got it. Door Dash et al serve the area.

LAUNDRY

We offer laundry services - $10 a load to offset power and laundry costs. We prefer to do the laundry for you as we are very particular about the things we put in our washing machine and dryer (and have had a few guests who couldn't quite "get it.") We use only Puretergent products, which are non toxic.

If you wear makeup, please do not get it on anything in your room, including our bedding. We provide makeup wipes. Makeup can stain sheets that then cannot be cleaned, and thus are not re-usable. Help us preserve our beautiful, high quality linens. Thanks.

NO PETS SORRY

We are unable to host pets or emotional support animals as residents of this shared house have allergies.

IN ROOM AMENITIES

We provide an electric kettle, a toaster, a microwave and a large compact frig in each room.

Also: coffee and tea utensils including drip coffee filter holder, filters and teapot. You'll also get a plate, bowls, silverware and napkins.

MANDATORY COVID POLICIES

Re COVID: we observe social distancing and mask wearing within six feet of another person (mandatory). Plan on wearing a mask outside of your room.

BATHROOM

We have rules for using the bathroom which include cleaning up after you shower and a basic "Leave No Trace" requirement.

CLEANING SUPPLIES

We have bleach wipes, cleaning sprays and bleach sprays in the bathroom for all to use. We use Puretergent cleaner, a non toxic, eco friendly spray for general cleaning and Chlorox bleach cleaner spray when needed. As bleach is toxic, we try to use it only on tub and tiled walls.

MAKEUP

We provide makeup wipes for removing makeup. Please use makeup wipes so that we can preserve our beautiful linens.

AIR FLOW

For air flow, we try to keep the bathroom door and windows open as much as weather permits to keep air flow at maximum levels. Ventilation is important.

LAUNDRY

The washer and dryer are available for $10 per load. We use non-toxic, eco friendly laundry soap (Puretergent, made by our friends), bleach and borax. We also have a few toxic spot removers (Shout, etc.)

Due to Covid, we are happy to take your laundry and wash and dry it. We do not allow guests to use the machines. (We're very picky about what products we use in them and from experience know that doing it ourselves is the best way for us to protect it from products like dryer sheets, fabric softeners, etc.)

ENTRY WAY

Though we have solar path lighting, you may want to additionally use your cell phone after dark to light your way from the street to the house. The path is on a downward slope and has stairs at certain sections.

WINE AND WINE TASTING

Also, since I am a wine writer (I am the senior editor of Slow Wine Guide, part of Slow Food), I have lots of fine wine. I am happy to supply a complimentary bottle of wine during your stay. (If you don't imbibe, I offer a complimentary bottle of house sparkling water.) I am also happy to offer private tastings for guests for a fee or teach you about organic or biodynamically grown wines (for a fee).

Oakland, Kalifornien, USA

Millsmont is almost a secret part of Oakland known mostly to locals. It's located on the hillside to the south of Mills College. (It overlooks but is not part of East Oakland, which is further south and to the west.) You can hear the Mills College bells ring each quarter hour.

Our neighbors include a ferry boat captain, a famous Mission mural painter, digital consultants for political campaigns, and a wellness oriented chiropractor.

Almost all of the buildings on our street are single family, middle class homes ($800-900,000+ in the Bay Area) occupied by long time residents. These include Asian, Latino, black, and white residents and families - we are the most ethnically diverse zip code in the Bay Area. You'll see them all walking dogs on the street.

There's a wonderful natural foods grocery store about 10 minutes away by car - Farmer Joe's has two locations. Further away, there are many other great purveyors - Berkeley Bowl and Rockridge Market Hall.

The neighborhood is notable for its sunny weather, a rarity especially in warmer months when both the city and Berkeley get a log of fog.

There are also wonderful hiking trails, meadows and redwood forests that are a five minute drive up the hill.

I am a writer/interactive media/digital strategist and former documentary filmmaker. Easy going, movie loving, connoisseur of life! I also write about organically grown wine and can tell you everywhere to go in wine country. I'm also a former travel writer and know the Bay Area well after living here for 30+ years. I'm well traveled, having spent time in India (all over), Italy, Greece, England and France. Re a negative review from Lacou: I'm sorry to say, I didn't think it was good karma for me to respond to the person named Lacou who wrote a disapproving review. But now I see I really do need to respond. She booked at my place in May (at the last minute) for three weeks, but never came here and never met me. She took an instant dislike to me on the phone for reasons that are not entirely clear to me. It seemed to revolve around her setting the time and terms of her stay, in violation of Airbnb policies. She wanted to come five hours earlier than stated arrival time. I told her I could take her luggage then but that we needed time to clean the room. I also told her we would need to swap a better bed into her room midway through her stay and offered her a pro-rated, hourly fee to compensate her for the estimated two hours it would take us. She also had 10 days advance notice of the bed swap. She wanted half price for the room for that day. I declined since she would only be inconvenienced for a few hours at most. She was very very rude and kept insisting that she would cancel the reservation. She did not appear to understand the strict cancelation policy would not result in any refund to her. Then she started threatening me that she would write a bad review if I did not refund her booking ($1400). I reported the threats to Airbnb help immediately and told them I was concerned. They contacted Lacou and talked to her about my long track record as a good host and about how many people had been happy to be guests here. I'm sorry Lacou was so unhappy (and writes in her review things that are untrue - the princess story was about someone else would stayed here, and had unrealistic expectations about host duties - like thinking I was her bellman). I still don't understand how a "guest" who never comes to the property is allowed to threaten a host (in writing on the Airbnb platform) and to post a bad review. But oh well. Moving on...and hoping for happier guests!
