Smith Valmarana Palace is a Venetian palace, located in the sestiere di Cannaregio overlooking the Grand canal.
Famous for having been the residence of English Ambassador Joseph Smith, whom was an agent of Canaletto during the sale of his paintings to Other Englishman.
This Place was originally a gothic byzantine structure however, when it became the English embassy and residence of the Ambassador Smith, he transformed it according to the taste of that period: In 1743 the painter and sculptor Antonio Visentini designed a new facade and continued working till its completion till 1751.
The Smith Valmarana residence is located on the ground floor of the Palace and it is easily accessible by taxi or private boat from the main water door. Alternatively, you can take the ferry Line 1 to the CA D'ORO Stop.
The apartment is right on the corner of the Santi Apostoli canal and the Grand canal, offering a view on the Canal and the internal canal where one can often see the venetian gondolieri.
The structure has a spacious living room offering a view on the Grand canal with 2 cozy sofas, a table, TV and a relaxation area.
Along with a kitchen, 2 bathrooms (one with window), a master bedroom and another with 2 single beds.
The master bedroom looks directly down on the Great Apostles canal with its own private water door.
An Elegant and tranquil apartment, ideal for couples or families making your trip to Venice an unforgettable experience.

Venedig, Veneto, Italien

The district of Cannaregio is the longest of the city after the Castle and the most populated. Cannaregio in fact occupies almost the entire area north of the Grand canal, extending from the train station (low numbers) to the north district of Santa Croce which is connected by the Ponte degli Scalzi and the Ponte della Costituzione, until the Castle where it shares almost entirely the east and south border. The church of San Cancian instead confines with Campo San Bartolomeo, in the district of San Marco.
The main water path of the Cannaregio canal connects the Grand canal to the lagoon. The only canal in the historic center to pass through the ferry in addition to the Grand canal.
The Canale di Cannaregio is crossed by 2 bridges:
Ponte delle Guglie so called for the four spires in the four corners;
Ponte dei Tre Archi (already Ponte di Sao Giobbe), the only bridge with three arches remained in Venice.
History
It is thought that the name comes from the wide rushes present in the area when it was still inhabited. This hypothesis is confirmed by a document of 1410 that says: “Cannaregio impercioché era chanedo et paludo con chanelle.”
Another theory, less plausible, believes that the name derives from Canal Regio, refereed to Canal di Cannaregio. In reality, it would also be a mistake indicated in some maps from the Hamburg times. Never-less, there are some important elements of the Napoleonic Venice, such as Antonio Ruzini, Niccolò Vendramin Calergi and Giovan Battista Combi who called the canal with the nickname of Canalreggio, letting presume therefore that such name was already used at the beginning of the eight hundred and that its origin was actually even more ancient.
A third theory brings back Cannaregio to the latin canaliculus (small canal) referring to the small branch of Marzenego that flow into the lagoon and which currents of freshwaters during low tide were passing though the canal of Cannaregio. This hypothesis would be proved by some documents dating back XI century that call the place Canaleclo or Canareclo.
During the XIX century in this district there was, under the Habsburg dynasty, the first land connection between Venice and the mainland, with the built of the Santa Lucia station as arrival point of the train bridge between Mestre and Venice. Consequently, in 1858 a third bridge on the Grand canal was built, the Ponte degli Scalzi, right in correspondence to the train station.
Cannaregio has always been the historic red and popular neighborhood. The areas outside the lagoon (Baia del Re, Chiovere, San Girolamo) until the '70 were considered rough due to the high percentage of compromised people resident. Various redevelopment projects, including building new residential buildings in some ex- industrial warehouses helped restore the area.
