Best things to do in Lissabon

“Lisbon's flea market is called "Feira da Ladra," often thought to mean "Thieves' Market" (in Portuguese, "ladra" is a woman thief) but it actually derives from "ladro," a bug or a flea found in antiques. A market of this type is thought to have been in place in Lisbon since the 12th Century, and the name "Feira da Ladra" was first mentioned in the 17th Century. The traders here are perfectly legal, offering everything from junk to unexpected treasures, around the Campo de Santa Clara, a square by the National Pantheon. The market is held every Tuesday and Saturday, from dawn to the early afternoon. There are small stalls, but many traders simply display their store on a stretched-out blanket. Hand-made artisan goods, CD's, books, clothes, coins, military objects, antiques and furniture are all on display here, so the occasional bargain is still possible.”

“At one point or another, every bar-hopper in Lisbon has visited Pensão Amor, at least to see the bold decor, if not for the drinks and socializing. Once a brothel, it comprises different rooms filled with bright decor, cushy seating, unique art, and a dancer’s pole. There is even a ‘library’ filled with erotic books. The back entrance opens to Pink Street, but entering from the front entrance at Rua Alecrim is much more impressive – the front room is decorated from floor to ceiling in bright colors and shocking artwork (the ceiling is even a work of art).”

“Portugal's most famous and longstanding flea market. From here you will also see the famous National Pantheon standing proud. The market is held every Tuesday and Saturday from dawn to dusk and sports every sort of antique, 2nd hand, military, clothing and miscellaneous goods the mind can fathom. Definitely worth at least 1 visit. the occasional bargain is still possible when rummaging through these stalls. ”

“For years (since 1995), this was a legendary African club in an abandoned palace, which it too had to abandon in 2007. It was reborn in early 2012 in a former warehouse by the river, in a more contemporary space but keeping the same party spirit. Live African music and Cape Verdean rhythms to dance to are the main attractions, but you may also find special poetry nights and activities such as dance lessons. In addition to the African sounds, the programming includes music from Latin-America and one night per month is dedicated to Fado. It opens from Wednesday to Sunday.”
