Cats' Den (the Den) is a spacious one-bedroom basement condo apartment
The Den features a large living room with a futon (suitable for one individual or a couple), dresser, closet, dining table/work space, armchair, recliner, and TV/cable; a sizable bedroom with a queen bed, dresser, closet, and TV/cable; a well equipped kitchen with a 4-cooktop range, refrigerator, microwave, cookware, dinnerware, a selection of locally roasted (Radina's) coffee and name brand gourmet coffee (Caribou, Starbucks) and Earl Grey/Lady Grey tea bags; a backyard vineyard and patio; two rooftop sun decks; front yard with trees and Yoshino cherry trees (blooming in spring); and off street parking on the wide driveway. Student Union parking garage and an ATA bus stop are located across from the Student Union on campus.
The Den's sleeping arrangement is comfortable for two couples (the queen bed and futon each can accommodate one couple). A queen air mattress (pumping needed) accommodates a couple. For 4-5 unrelated people, two sleeping bags are on hand in the living room closet. In the past, Cats’ Den hosted a maximum number of 6 young adults.
Rooftop decks and our back/front patios are open to guests at any time during the reasonable hours of the stay: Rooftops are available 8:00AM-11:00PM, and back and front yard patios are available 24/7, unless noted otherwise at check-in).
Guests' main entrance is located on the back of the house, right off the driveway, for a private, keyless, and direct access. Using the front entrance is an option. Outdoor lights are mostly automatic, action-motivated, for safety and energy efficiency.
Guests may be invited to our main floor for refreshments upon arrival.
The Den's living area is functional and comfortable, furnished with a large ceiling-mounted TV, futon, recliner, and an accent chair, as well as a dining table and chairs.
Privacy screen in the living room: To ensure an additional privacy for the guests sleeping in the living room, a 8-panel, tall shoji screen is placed on the corner of the bedroom. The screen will keep the sleeping guests separated from other activities going on in the dining area and the main entry way. The bedroom has its own wall-mounted TV.
The Den comes with a fully equipped kitchen, furnished with basic dining ware (both ceramic and plastic), stainless silver ware, pots/pans, and utensils, along with trash cans and a recycle bin. Also provided are a coffee maker, electric kettle, French press coffee maker, espresso maker, teapot, and a small selection of ground coffee and tea varieties. If you need anything else, just ask. We will do our best to fulfill your needs. If you need extra stuff (including tea, coffee, etc.), just let us know.
Trivia: The Vineyard House previously housed K-State administrators/professors and their families, including the late Frank Hagans, former dean of College of Agriculture; Dr. Jerry Frieman, former professor/head of Psychological Sciences; and Dr. James Urban, former professor of Biology, and the late Diane Urban, wife and former university counsel. We've lived here since 2005 and are still loving it. The Eugene Field Neighborhood has been known to be a coveted residential area for members of the greater K-State family and others. Welcome to the Den!
Cats' Den at the Vineyard House is located close to K-State and east end of the Eugene Field Neighborhood that is lined with old trees, charming homes, Greek Houses, student rental housing, and famous figures (involving Gloria Vanderbilt and Truman Capote). A number of K-State faculty members and administrators, as well as alumni, choose to reside in this neighborhood following their retirement and/or during their tenure on campus.
From Cats' Den, guests can walk to most popular hangout places, shops, pubs/bars, and diners for all types of dining needs - fine, casual, fast food, ethnic, etc. Aggieville shopping/dining/entertainment districts are only 3-5 blocks away from our place. Most eateries on Poyntz and in the Manhattan Marketplace are walkable, if you enjoy walking and are up for a 20-40 minute walk. Driving will get you there in only 3-8 minutes.
