Cave
“BEST Caverns in my opinion (I grew up in Grottoes). Also offering hiking, biking, fishing, picnicing, mini-golf, and a pool (assuming Covid restrictions are lifted). If you are spelunker, check to see of their Fountain Cave Adventure Tours are operating. Grand Caverns was discovered in 1804 and opened for tours in 1806, making Grand Caverns the oldest continually operating show cave in the United States. During the Civil War and the “Valley Campaign” the cave was visited by both Confederate and Union soldiers. There are over 200 verified civil war signatures in the cave. ”

“IX is a great spot for strolling in the day with a funky playground, restaurants and a coffee shop peppered throughout. They also host The Looking Glass, an immersive art installation that's "an otherworldly enchanted forest" created by 14 Charlottesville artists. Also, at night sometimes there's live music or DJ's and dancing in the lower industrial space. Worth checking out!”

“This used to be something of a secret among Charlottesville natives, but has become very well known over the years. Drive out barracks road to Sugar Hollow, the old girlscout camp, past the Sugar Hollow Resevoir. Cross the creek and itś a fairly easy hike to the swimming hole. On the way back, look out for the old chimney. (Somehow I never see it on the way up!) ”

“We love hiking the many trails here. Our favorite trail leads to a slow, rocky creek that children love to play in. Benches are nearby so that parents can sit while children play. ”
