Shopping

The local market is Madina Market where you can get almost everything you want at a reasonable price - but you must be prepared to haggle! You can also visit the Makola Market in Central Accra, one of the biggest markets in Ghana. Ghanaians love haggling at the market. The local supermarket, gym and shops where you can buy African wear and local artifacts can be found at the A&C Mall in East Legon. You could also visit Accra Mall, if you’re looking for grocery shopping, personal and fashion accessories, small electric appliances, jewellery and fabrics.

Beaches

Labadi beach (closest to HOME-from-HOME in East Legon) Kokrobite beach Bojo beach (good for kids, there is the House Party Arcade Games and Go-Kart racing track with great food along the way to Bojo) If you’re travelling outside Accra, we would recommend Aquasafari or Treasure Island in Ada (by the River Volta).

Travel

We provide a dedicated airport pick up and drop off service. Uber and BOLT are also operational in Ghana. You can pay using your credit/debit card in the usual way or by selecting CASH payment before confirming your booking. Taxis operate everywhere, but can be expensive - we recommend you always check and agree a fare to your destination before entering the taxi and starting your journey. If you want to travel in a really local-style/rough and ready then try the “trotro service” Cross country buses to other cities using State Transport corporation buses is the best way to travel safely .

Tipping culture

Just so you’re aware when you’re out and about, Ghana does have a ‘tipping’ culture. It is usual to make discretionary tips of between five to ten Ghana Cedis depending on the type, and if relevant, depending on the extent of service - and of course, if there is exceptional support then this is taken into account and tippes accordingly.

Plugs/adapters

UK-style 3-pin plugs 220-230 Volts are in use throughout the house. If you do not have UK-fitted appliances, then it will be good to bring your own otherwise plug converters/adapters are available at any of the main supermarkets, such as the A&C Mall in East Legon or at Accra Mall but can be expensive.

Glass bottles

In Ghana, all glass bottles get recycled and reused by the manufacturer. Please leave any empty bottles under the water tank for Patrick to collect.
