Sightseeing

See Lumberman's Monument Take a short trip just outside of Hale to see the Lumberman's Monument at the Huron-Manistee National Forest (fs.usda.gov). This 14-foot monument along the Au Sable River pays tribute to the woodsmen of the lumber industry who were key in the development of northern Michigan's economy and key to providing lumber to help build the country. Visitors can climb through a logjam, work an actual crosscut saw and learn through audio and video presentations what it was like in the life of a logger in the area. The visitor's center at the monument also offers a kid's program and guided nature hikes.
