The closest Lake to the house. Predominantly a fishing lake, the ‘Boathouse Cafe’ offers lovely views over the Lake. A great stop off on your way to Hawkshead.

The fifth largest Lake, you can hire boats and bikes from the Coniston Boating Centre. There are plenty of shops, cafes, and pubs in Coniston village.

Walks

A lovely walk directly from the cottage. Follow the public footpath to the rear of the cottage, walk across the river bridge and into the ancient woodland. Take a right and keep walking, after 15 minutes you will appear at Rusland Church, a beautiful slate church in the Rusland Valley.

A nice 2 hour walk from the house (via Pub!). Turn right out of the cottage, follow the road for 100m and take the steep footpath on your left into the forest. The loop takes you past 2 tarns, Satterthwaite (via the Eagle’s Head) and past Force Falls on the way back. See the photos for a map.

Grizedale Forest

A nice 2 hour walk from the house (via Pub!). Turn right out of the cottage, follow the road for 100m and take the steep footpath on your left into the forest. The loop takes you past 2 tarns, Satterthwaite (via the Eagle’s Head) and past Force Falls on the way back. See the photos for a map.
Latterbarrow is a small fell which in an easy walk from Hawkshead. At the top you will get great views over Windermere and the Lake District Fells. Afterwards head back to Hawkshead for a ice cream, fish & chips or pub meal! I would recommend parking at the Car Park in Hawkshead village centre. See photos for a map.

Although it looks like a light house, Hoad Monument is a 100-foot tower at the top of Hoad Hill, near Ulverston. It commentates Sir John Barrow. A relatively easy walk with great views over Morecambe Bay and the Lake District. A nice little walk if you are going to Ulverston.
Tarn Hows circular is a classic Lake District walk with easy access paths, a National Trust car park and lovely views across the water. Accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Located on the East side of Coniston Water, Brantwood is a historic house with gardens. It was once home to John Ruskin, England’s greatest art critic, thinker and social reformer. There is a great cafe with views over the Lake.

Set over 30 acres of terraced gardens and grounds, Brockhole is the Lake District visitor centre by the Lake Windermere. There’s a great adventure playground for kids, bike and boat hire, and a lovely cafe at the historic house.
