Sightseeing

Often you will find yourself alone on this pristine beach. At low tide, there are rockpools you can explore. You can swim here, but there are no lifeguards so children should be watched closely. Great for surfcasting and diving as well. It takes about 20 minutes to get to Mangakuri from Hapua.

Ten minutes down the road is an example of what Hawke's Bay looked like before the land was cleared for agriculture. The Kairakau Loop Track is located in Elsthorpe and Mohi Bush Scenic Reserves and is a great opportunity to walk through mature lowland podocarp forest with excellent examples of old kahikatea, matai, miro and tōtara. Native birds are plentiful including kererū, tūī and fantails. The 600m loop is an easy walk that takes about 20 minutes.

You may encounter sheep or cows being moved along the road in this neighborhood where the locals always give you a friendly wave. Kahuranaki Rd has a security association and since surveillance cameras were placed at either end of the road a decade ago with warning signs, there have been no burglaries in the area.
