A beautiful geologic creation just 30 minutes away where you can hike, mountain bike, visit Multnomah Falls, the fish hatchery, and spend an afternoon in Hood River watching (or joining!) the kiters and windsurfers blast across the river.
There is no better way to get acquainted with the northern Pacific coast, then a visit to Cannon Beach, Manzanita, or Astoria. There are miles of beaches to walk but bring layers as it can be a bit chilly at the beach, even if it is 90 degrees inland. Short Sands beach is popular for surfing, although the secret is out so expect crowds on nice days. Parking can fill up very early. Astoria has breweries and art galleries and a great museum about the Columbia River Bar. Manzanita is a quaint spot to enjoy the beach; expect strong north-westerly winds on summer afternoons.

Don’t miss Timberline Lodge, it is a work of art.

Hood’s 3 resorts, or x-country ski around Mt St. Helens. In the summer there is mountain biking, hiking, swimming in the mountain lakes, and skiing on the Palmer glacier at Timberline on Mt. Hood. Don’t miss Timberline Lodge, it is a work of art.
