Boccadasse is a characteristic fishing hamlet. From the esplanade above, a creuza (traditional Ligurian mule track) leads down to the hamlet's small beach. The hamlet makes for a perfect postcard: with its colourful houses, beautiful little beach and fishing boats pulled up onto the shore, it is the epitome of a classic fishing village that has miraculously escaped the passage of the time. Today Boccadasse is popular for its ice-cream parlours and characteristic restaurants that serve seafood specialities.

Genoa's historic centre is One of the largest in Europe, it unwinds in an intricate maze of alleyways (caruggi) that open unexpectedly onto small squares; the soul of the city lives here in these alleyways, where smells, tastes, and cultures have combined throughout history. here you can find noble palaces and splendid churches alternate with historic shops that have been in operation for over 100 years, where local specialities are still prepared according to ancient recipes!

this funicular provides a link between the city centre and its heights. The line is especially popular with hikers, cyclists (bicycles are carried) and families looking to treat themselves to a day trip out of town. The station of the Madonnetta deserves a special mention: it opens onto the Sanctuary of the same name, where you can admire a year-round Nativity scene depicting aspects of daily life in mediaeval Genoa.

Driving a car in Genoa can be difficult, due to the layout of the city. Thanks to the public transport network, however, a car is not necessary to explore the city's tourist attractions, and visitors are advised to park in one of the city's numerous public car parks. Genoa's historic centre is protected by a Limited Traffic Zone (Zona a Traffico Limitato, or ZTL); driving through and parking in the ZTL is prohibited for vehicles of non-residents. Outside the ZTL, parking is regulated by the so-called "Blu Area" system: areas designated by blue pavement markings serve to ensure maximum availability of parking for residents. Car Parks in Genoa: www.genovaparcheggi.it Within these "Blu Area" parking zones, non-resident vehicle parking is costly, with metered rates. For more information: www.bluareagenova.it
