The Brown line will take you to the far Northwest part of the city, or to the loop. Train fare is $2.50 per ride, and you can purchase a card in the station.

The schedule can be really tricky and a bit confusing, but it'll take you downtown super fast, and can also reach the suburbs. Find the schedule for the UP-N line on metrarail.com
The stop is right across from the front door to Mariano's, and is less than a block from my front door. Fare is a bit more expensive than the el, but only by a few dollars.

It's less than a block away, and can be reached by walking to the southeast most corner of the complex and walking through the gate. Super easy, convenient, and comprehensive store with a wine bar, oysters and sushi, and a hot bar to boot.

The Green Mill is a Chicago institution, with everything from Jazz to Spoken Word to Story-telling events, there's never not something going on there. It's hazy, laid back, and stuck in the 70's in the best way.

Tiny Lounge is a longstanding local hangout. It's a modern, laid-back, and dim-lit lounge with great, but unpretentious cocktails, good food, and friendly people.
It's one of my go-to hangouts pretty much always.

The Davis is an old movie house that's been kept running and updated a few times over the years. Movies are affordable, it's smaller than your usual multi-plex, and it has a bar/restaurant attached next door. You can get there on the brown line (got north toward Kimball, get off at Western) , or if you're up for a long walk, it's reachable in about 30 minutes.
