We love Mel's for real-deal Southern/soul/comfort food. It's not fancy and there's no booze, but the food is excellent. Though it's on Main Street between the beloved Continental Divide and Maya, it's often overlooked.

Excellent Mexican food, surly service. It's totally worth it, though.

The owner of Spendy's is always concocting novel and delicious gelato flavors - some based on favorite local cocktails, some using favorite local beers! The classic flavors are also represented and are amazing! They also have Italian style hot chocolate in winter - it's like hot drinkable pudding (in the best way!). Plus, they have great coffee. Oh, and pastry. This place is the best!

This Mexican sweet shop is AMAZING! The popsicles are iconic, and the ice cream, pastry, and savory street-food style snacks never disappoint.

If you're heading south down 29, pop into the delightful town of Lovingston and get one of the world's best cups of coffee.

This is a "tasting room" at the Bridge PAI gallery (see my note about the Bridge in "Arts" section). The cider is good, the space is cool, and the location makes it a great spot for having a drink before dinner in Belmont or Downtown.

Excellent sushi and Japanese comfort foods. We are not fans of their big rolls (so! much! rice!), but everything else is fantastic. They get very busy, so go early!

Great vegetarian Vietnamese food. The Bahn mi is so great, you won't even miss the meet. It's in the same building as the Jefferson School African American Heritage center, so you can get some history lessons after lunch!

Drinks & Nightlife
This place is an institution! Dinner is French and upscale, but we go for the late night menu. The burger is $8 (?) and FANTASTIC, and the desserts are creative and delicious. The bartenders know what they're doing. Plus, there's always great by-the-glass wines . The basement bar is wood paneled and homey. You might even run into us, since this is our favorite bar in town.

Essentials
Virginia is famous for our gas station chicken, and Brown's is the best in town. It's a few blocks away and a great place to get some food and snack basics, gas, and even soft serve ice cream. The people who work here are incredibly sweet.

The B&R is your typical bodega, run by nice dudes with a decent craft beer selection. If you need basic emergency supplies but don't feel like driving, this spot probably has what you need.

Parks & Nature
The Lawn itself is cool, but the beautiful gardens behind the serpentine walls are breathtaking! Not many people explore these gardens, so you probably won't run into many other people. There are excellent climbing trees!

These are great trails! There's some wide, paved trails, and some more rugged dirt trails, too. You can walk up the mountain to Monticello!

Arts & Culture
The Bridge gallery is one of the most fun art places in town, and it's only a ten minute walk. In addition to interesting and off-beat monthly shows, they host lots of events like rock shows and techno bingo. Check out their schedule to see if they're doing anything cool while you're in town. Also, Potter's Cider has a tasting room open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Entertainment & Activities
OK, I know you didn't come all the way to CVille to watch a movie, but if your plans get rained out, the Alamo is a great place to watch a movie and have a marg. In addition to first run movies, they often show various classics.
