Local Food Scene
East Nashville has some of the best restaurants around! There's something for everyone.
The food here is outstanding! Creative tacos with a cool vibe. Red-Headed Stranger, a nod to Willie Nelson's album, is a Tex-Mex restaurant that serves breakfast & lunch fare for dine-in and to-go, alongside a full bar and roasted coffee from Nashville-based Stay Golden. The menu is small and inexpensive. Tacos cost $3.50, a burrito is $8, a burger is $6 and queso with fresh tortillas is $6 with options for extra add-ins such as chorizo or pico de gallo. Taco options, which are served on housemade flour tortillas, include chopped brisket with eggs, American cheese and arbol hot sauce; a tater tot taco with jalapeno crema, red Hatch chiles and American cheese; and a barbacoa taco with black beans, pico de gallo and jack cheese. Also included are several vegetarian options, including a poblano taco featuring the chef's uber-popular whipped feta cheese, crispy rice and an original hot sauce blend. The restaurant’s hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. It's super close to walk to and a very hip hang!

The Pharmacy offers a creative selection of burgers & sausages, along with an old-time soda fountain & indoor/outdoor seating. A naked burger starts at $6.50 and can be upgraded with toppings from a list that includes wasabi aioli, guacamole, salsa, pesto, maple or beer mustards, horchata crema fresca, curry ketchup, black beans, gravy, chili, sour cream and more. My favorite is the Farm Burger, topped with ham & bacon, maple mustard and a fried egg. Hours: MON-THURS : 11:00am - 10:00pm FRI & SAT: 11:00am - 11:00pm SUN: 11:00am - 10:00pm

Before we moved into the East Nashville area, my husband and I ate at the Otaku location in the Gulch and loved the ramen there. When we moved to East Nashville, we found that Otaku had a Pop To-Go location just down the street from our house. We've tried the Tennessee Tonkatsu, Shoyu, Spicy Miso and the Szechuan Pork Miso, as well as their Hot Chicken and FGTBLT Bao Buns. Needless to say, it's hard to decide what to order because everything is SO GOOD. I love that they serve the noodles separate from the broth so that the noodles don't break down and get soggy in between the time you pick it up and sit down to eat at home. Ordering online for pick up or delivery is quick and super easy.

This is the best place to get authentic New York style pizza on the east side of town. You can get it by the slice or you can order whole pies, stromboli, salads & appetizers. Pizza is served from a window until 3am on weekends, which is great for the East Nashville bar crowd. We love the garlic knots, the Vodka Sauce pie, the Rocket and Pesto pies, as well as the classic Pepperoni.

Featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-In's & Dives," Mas Tacos makes the best authentic tacos in town. It's cash only, so don't forget to stop by the ATM! We love the pulled pork tacos, the tilapia tacos and the pozole, but everything on the menu is great!

Hunter's Station just opened this past month and we are so excited! There's something here for everyone: The Grilled Cheeserie: Gourmet versions of an American classic: the grilled cheese sandwich. Get the pimiento mac 'n' cheese and dip it in the creamy tomato soup. Follow up with an outrageous gourmet milkshake. The Picnic Tap: Picnic-style foods like hot dogs, Bavarian pretzels & beer cheese, burgers, hot chicken sandwiches and more. For dessert, cookie dough egg rolls with vanilla ice cream are amazing! Tacos Aurora: The most authentic, unadulterated, no frills, straight from the streets of California tacos you can get. No lettuce, no cheese, no sour cream - just the way I like 'em! Vui's Kitchen: Vietnamese stop for pho, banh mi & noodle bowls, plus drinks, with indoor/outdoor seating. Everything is fresh and tasty! Citizen Kitchen: Eclectic dining options. Freshly baked breads, meal kits to-go and even wine & canned mixed cocktails. Hugh Baby's Burgers & BBQ: Chill, old-school stop offering BBQ meats & burgers, chili dogs & fries. The menu is inexpensive and there's even an outside walk-up window for pick-up orders!

If you want to get in on the Nashville hot chicken scene, our favorite is Hattie B's. There are a few locations around Nashville, but we always go the one in the Melrose neighborhood on 8th Ave. Be prepared for a line (there's always one) but it moves pretty quickly. I get the tenders plate with fries and slaw and my husband gets the hot chicken sandwich with fries. And, if you think you can handle the hottest level of spice, good luck to you! I stick with Mild and my hubby with Hot. Mostly because we like to be able to taste our food, LOL.

The Woolworth building is a critical piece of our country’s history. Woolworth's on 5th features the lunch counter at which a group of young African Americans began the movement to desegregate Nashville lunch counters. Among the protestors arrested was future US Congressman John Lewis, who protested from the lunch counter at Woolworth. His arrest at Woolworth that day was his very first. Today, the building is a registered historic site as part of the Fifth Avenue Historic District in Nashville for its part in the Civil Rights movement. As a restaurant, the main room gives you a sense of the hugeness of the Woolworth store in it's heyday, where you can sit at several tables or private curved booths, and watch vintage music & dance films. The Southern-based menu is tweaked with modern touches and the historic counter serves amazing boozy milkshakes.

Pinewood Social is a restaurant, a coffee shop, a bowling alley, an outdoor oasis, and a co-working space all rolled into one. It's a great place to have a cup of coffee and get some work done during the day before visiting the pool and grabbing dinner and a craft cocktail in the evening. And there's a lounging pool & bocce ball for the summer crowd!

The art deco decor of Fox Bar & Cocktail Club makes you feel like you’re in Gatsby’s house rather than in East Nashville. Dark and moody, this jazz bar is steeped in New Orleans flavor. It's almost like a movie set you'd imagine from Interview with a Vampire: smoky red velvet curtains, dark, worn wooden tables and captain's chairs, jazz musicians & vocalists, food with New Orlean's flair and fantastic cocktails. Great for groups or a girl's night out.

Skull’s Rainbow Room is located along a cobblestone alley in Printer's Alley. Featuring a burlesque show and folklore surrounding the murder of its namesake founder, David “Skull” Schulman, Skull's has been a Printer’s Alley fixture for 70 years. The room’s black and white stage has been graced by a variety of musicians -- Etta James, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash, just to name a few. Its menu and cocktail list make it a downtown favorite for tourists and townies alike. Try the Skull (rum, cream of coconut, pineapple, grenadine, ginger) while watching a late-night burlesque performance Wednesday through Saturday. And there’s jazz every night.

After a Sunday morning walk along the tree-lined sidewalks on the historic Belmont Avenue, a stop at Proper Bagel is one of our favorite things to do. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. My hubby & I started walking the four miles into downtown (8 miles round-trip) on Sunday mornings a few months ago and we ducked into the Fairlane Hotel downtown one of those mornings to check out their deli, the Union Teller, for breakfast. Needless to say, this is our destination almost every Sunday. They kind of know us there by sight :) The Classic with scrambled eggs, bacon and challah slices is my menu choice, while my husband always gets an everything bagel with cream cheese and steals a piece of my bacon. You can get your bagels for the week there while you're waiting. They're HUGE. And so good. The service is fantastic, the atmosphere feels like home and they project retro cartoon & movies on the wall for the kiddos.
