Located not far from the Vatican, 4 minutes from the apartment ,Panificio Bonci is a bakery opened by internationally renowned baker and Pizzarium founder Gabriele Bonci in 2012. Bonci trades in Roman bakery classics like loaves of bread, cookies, cakes, pastries, and some prepared foods, such as impeccably roasted chicken. There’s pizza al taglio (by the slice), too, and the toppings are far more mainstream than the creative combos you’ll find atop pies at Pizzarium nearby.

When in Rome, you must drink espresso. Drip coffee and Starbucks don’t exist here. There are some unspoken rules if you don’t want to look like a tourist when ordering. First, cappuccinos are only drunk at breakfast. After that, order un caffè(a shot of espresso) or un caffè macchiato (a shot of espresso with a dollop of steamed milk). If you ask for a latte, you’ll simply get milk. In the hotter months, ask for un caffè freddo (cold espresso sweetened with loads of sugar) or crema di caffè (the Roman equivalent of a frappuccino). Two of the most famous cafés are Tazza d’Oro and Caffè Sant’Eustachio.

Rome has no shortage of excellent gelaterias. Giolitti, a few blocks from the Pantheon, is the city’s best old-school gelateria.Traditional and imperdible.

Located near the Trevi Fountain, Al Moro is among Rome’s most historic restaurants. Order Al Moro’s seasonal dishes, like artichokes in the winter and early spring and mushrooms in the fall, then order the house pasta, Al Moro’s own version of carbonara made with a pancetta-enriched egg sauce and red pepper flakes. Al Moro is pricey, so be prepared to spend a bit more for the same dishes you’ll find at Armando al Pantheon or another institution.( Vicolo delle Bollette 13

The newest venture from local brewery Birra del Borgo pours plenty of beer, but also serves a full food menu from Luca Pezzetta, a pizza baker. There are a handful of front- row seats by the pizza station, where Pezzetta and his team prepare “trrranch” (sandwiches made with pizza dough), pizza in teglia (pizza baked in sheet pans), and pizze tonde (round pizzas). The menu also includes pasta dishes, as well as cured meats and cheese plates. The drink selection is split between Birra del Borgo-brand beers, an assortment of domestic and imported craft brews, and beer-based cocktails designed by the Jerry Thomas Project, Rome’s top craft cocktail bar. It is a cozy trattoria just steps from bustling Campo de’ Fiori but tucked away enough that it’s easy to miss if you’re not keeping your eyes out. It serves stellar traditional fare in a rustic setting with attentive service and great prices. The menu is ample, even touting a number of vegetarian dishes, and everything is extremely flavorful and comforting. What’s not to love? Save room for dessert because it’s excellent. Trapizzino chain opened in Trastevere in 2017. Pizzaiolo Stefano Callegari invented the trapizzino in 2009, merging the triangular shape of the popolar tramezzino sandwich with a long, slowly leavened pizza dough. He fills his tricornered creations with Roman classics like oxtail simmered with tomato and celery, chicken with bell peppers, and tripe cooked with tomato. Also in Via Vespasiano 2, 10 minutes from the apartment

A delightful restaurant lying on a perpendicular street from busy Via del Corso, Il Falchetto has a tasty menu of modernized classic dishes in a surprisingly calm and lovely atmosphere. You’ll find a wide range of options here, including a fish menu, in a refined but casual setting. Everything is beautifully presented, from the antipasti to the desserts, and you’d do well to opt for one of the tables outside beneath the veranda to round out the whole experience. This bakery sells traditional Roman Jewish sweets. The pizza ebraica — an almond-flour-based fruit cake studded with nuts, raisins, and candied fruits — is an easy specialty to eat on the fly, but the ricotta and sour-cherry tart is spectacular and worth the mess of eating a slice on one of the nearby benches. Also try the amaretti (sugar-packed almond paste cookies) and biscotti made with heaps of cinnamon and a smattering of whole almonds.( Via del Portico d'Ottavia 1)

The dough is classical Neapolitan pizza dough leavened naturally. It is now also possible to sample some excellent variations prepared with dough based on spelt flour, wholemeal flour, or a mixture of gluten-free flours The quality of the raw materials is excellent: the extra virgin olive oil, the biological spelt flour, the stone-ground wholemeal flour all of which originate from Abruzzo and are often biological. In front of Vatican, in Piazza Risorgimento, 10 minutes from the apartment.
