City/town information
Heroica Mulege is the town just 19 km North of the property. Although small compared to the surrounding towns, it is perfect nonetheless with a rich history, most noticeable being the name itself which comes from the Mexican-American War when the occupants defeated the Americans earning the name Heroica. Above the town, you will see Mission Santa Rosalía de Mulegé, which was founded in 1705 and later abandoned in 1828 with only the exterior being restored to maintain its beauty which is only complemented by its location as The Mission overlooks the oasis town and river. This spot is perfect for sightseeing and taking in the history and architecture. After entering the town through the archway, you will find many restaurants (see separate page on guidebook), stores, and curio shops. As the town is rather small, it is perfect to walk around and spend the day seeing all that it has to offer. One of our favorite pastimes is looking at what we can find in the local Curio shops. Near the bank, there are two amazing shops directly across from one another, run by a husband and wife, who get their selections from Oaxaca, including blankets, clothing, and other items such as trinkets and locally made glassware. There are also many grocery stores in town, our top three are Super Mercado Alba known locally as the economic store, Mini Super Ayleth which offers a wide selection, and Sauls that has many imported goods. After grocery shopping at Sauls, if you continue to drive East towards the Sea of Cortez along the river, you will see the neighborhood of Loma Azul and the Lighthouse which is surrounded by flourishing tide pools, that make for a beautiful way to watch the sunset and end your day.
