The beauty of this trip is not the destination of Goldendale itself but the roadtrip along the Columbia River Gorge, going far enough to see the different microclimates along this iconic route. The secret is to return to Portland via the Washington side, via Hwy 14 , stopping at the Maryhill Winery and Cascade Cliffs winery. Then travel through the beautiful town of White Salmon for some grub. Feast is one of my favorite restaurants in that area

Dog Mountain Trailhead station
Washington 14I make it a point to do this hike at least once a year. It's steep/strenuous but 3.5 hours (good pace) is bearable for the astounding views of the Columbia gorge, especially during the spring bloom, where you're surrounded by wild flowers. The trail is narrow but the terrain varies so you are soaking a lot in throughout the hike
f you crave waterfalls and easy hiking, this is the place. More waterfalls per mile than any other trails in the area. Make sure to stop by the German-themed town of Mt. One of the local’s favorites, this seemingly never ending trail crosses rivers, and (slowly) ascends to heights above the creek that will give you vertigo. At the six mile mark is the unbelievable Tunnel Falls. Save some energy for the return hike, en route to food and bev at the town of Cascade Locks, where you can rest those sore feet

Incredible hike that starts from Timberline Lodge. When you cross the creek, make a right for a majestic hidden waterfall. Most people don't know about this secret gem.

You've hiked but have you hiked a sand dune on the coast? I did a 7-miler here and it was breathtaking. With haystack rocks in the sea and incredible landscape. This is worth the drive (1.5 hours or so). Surrounded by restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops, you are well taken care of after the hike. Local's tip: skip the $10 parking fee and drive onto the beach south of the sand dunes, then head due North (AWD or 4x4 recommended). Park your car whereever you like and start hiking to the highest point you see, you won't regret it.

Do a loop around this lake and capture reflections of mount hood. Then jump in from the beach and cool off. Sounds like a glorious day. Be aware that this is a high-traffic area on the weekends.

Easy breezy, mostly shaded and awesome views! 6 miles but it is like a walk in the park.

Moderate hike but doable. It is 9 miles round-trip out and back. The views are endless. Don't just get out the car and snap pix. Get in there, meet the chipmunks, rabbits, and birds of prey. When you think it gets really sketchy (deep), then turnaround

Brewskis from the Source
With more breweries per-capita than anywhere in the country, Portland is THE Beer Mecca. Innovation and passion feeds this dynamic local industry. Don't believe me? Stroll down the beer isle at the grocery store and you would be dizzy with massive selections that rotates every week, with a seemingly-neverending array of new brands and releases.

Popped out of nowhere is this GIANT and modern structure on the waterfront in Hood River (1 hour drive). If these guys started in a garage, they must have rich ass parents because I swear it is about a $20-30M facility. The vibe is killer and so are their homebrewed concoctions. Their patio is out-of-this-world.

If you're staying at the Flying Frog Yurt, this is the best brewery nearby. Small, family-owned, and with a distinct PNW vibe. It's a local's dive kinda brewing but beers are on-point

The place is anything but Gigantic but their flavors can certainly classified as such. Specializing in IPAs, this joint is industrial, local, and approachable. Local's hangout with solid brews.

Rooftop brew pub? Check. Founded in 2010, they may seem like newcomers, but that's hilariously ancient with how fast microbrews come and go in PDX. However, if breweries aren't crushing it, they aren't opening four prime pub locales in a decade. Have a sip and you'll know why.
