Derry the last walled city to be built in Europe! Derry was the first planned and only completely walled city in the country. It is the largest monument in state care in Northern Ireland. The walls were built between 1613 – 1618 by The Honourable Irish Society to protect the early ‘planted’ Protestant settlers that arrived from England and Scotland. The Derry walls have the longest, complete circuit of ramparts of any of the remaining 30 walled towns in Ireland.

Recognise the Guildhall Clock? It was modelled on London’s Big Ben. Sitting within reach of our famous 400-year-old Walls is one of the City’s most recognisable - and arguably one of the most stunning - landmarks, the Guildhall. It has been in the heart of city life since 1887 and the auburn brick building is the anchor for the buzzing Guildhall Square. The Guildhall’s most arresting feature is its collection of stunning stained-glass windows. Donated by London Companies, they represent everything from fishmongers to musicians. During The Troubles the Guildhall was the focus of multiple terror attacks. The building was badly damaged by two bombs in 1972, but was restored at a cost of £1.7 million and reopened in 1977. The square in front of the Guildhall regularly plays host to important events and was the site of U.S. President Bill Clinton's address when he visited the city in November 1995. The Guildhall was also home to the Saville Inquiry into the events of Bloody Sunday from 1998 to 2005.
