Beach

5 minutes by car or a 40 minute walk along the foot path that runs across the back of the cottage and across the cliff tops will take you to this stunning location. Lindsway Bay is a lovely south facing beach which at low tide is excellent for swimming and bodyboarding. The beach is also a favourite location for famous beach sculpture Jon Foreman. Sculpt The World can be found on Facebook. Please be aware that access to the beach is down a relatively steep path wit steps in the rocks and then involves a clamber over some rocks at the bottom to reach the sand.

Stretching over a mile this expanse of golden sand offers some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere on the Welsh coast. To experience the continuous expanse of sand punctuated by rocky outcrops the best time to visit is 2 hours either side of high tide. There is a National Trust car park half a mile from the beach where you can also find the highly recommended Runwayskiln cafe.

From the beach below the cottage, a must do activity in the warmer months is to explore the long tidal creek of Sandy Haven with your paddle boards and kayaks. The trick is to be carried up the creek in the hour before high water, then enjoy the slack water before returning down the creek on the outgoing tide. With woodland either side to explore and an abundance of wildlife to spot be sure to also keep an eye for the wreck of an old sailing ship which can be found around the right angled bend in the middle of the creek. Another popular activity for the children is crabbing from the footbridge across the Sandy Haven inlet at low tide. Armed with buckets, lengths of string and pieces of bacon a full bucket of crabs can usually be gathered in no time at all.

Wildlife

Skomer Island, lying less than a mile off the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast, is a world renowned wildlife paradise. The exposed headlands, towering offshore rocks, and sheltered inlets of this fascinating island are home to a incredible variety of wildlife, both above and below the surface. Skomer is most famous for its Puffins. Together with neighboring Skokholm Island it forms the largest breeding Puffin colony in Southern Britain. But the Puffins account for just a small portion of the wildlife who call this island their home. With and estimated population of up to 165,000 pairs, Skomer is also home to the largest and most important breeding colony of Manx Shearwater in the world! The island is open 1 April (or Good Friday, whichever is earlier) to 30 September and is closed Mondays. Landing trips depart from Martin’s Haven, just a short drive from the cottage, daily at 10am, 11am and 12 noon.
