Food scene

From Website: Basic Necessities is an off-beat café, wine and cheese shop nestled in the Rockfish Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Nellysford, Virginia. Since 1997 we've been offering what many call “a taste of Europe in the Blue Ridge Mountains.” We offer great wines at affordable prices, mostly from small, organic producers we visit and know personally, imported cheeses, fresh local baked breads, and memorable meals in a colorful and creative atmosphere. Our staff welcomes locals, skiers at Wintergreen Resort, traveling foodies, and those simply exploring beautiful Nelson County. At lunch we have long featured Sue Pfaltz’s delicious and innovative soups, big house salads, and seasonal specialties. Reservations are advised for Friday and Saturday night dinners where guests find creatively-prepared dishes and musical entertainment. Our popular Sunday brunch is from 10-2 and frequently features a harpist during the middle of the day. The retail shop has an extensive selection of wines and cheeses on a wide range of price-points, along with an ever-changing display of products such as fresh flowers, candy, local books as well as Kay's books, breads and "gifts." The name? We're often asked about the cumbersome name. When Kay returned to Virginia after over ten years in Paris, she settled in the tiny town of Nellysford, which then (as now) had no traffic light. A far cry from Paris. Finding no good bread, wine, cheese or chocolate (the basic necessities of life) and used to the abundance of Paris, she decided to do something about it. A little magic was created and the rest is history. We're proud to say, more than two decades later, we're still going strong.

A personal favorite for Lunch with local flavor. It is located on the right as you head into Nellysford from Wintergreen. Look for a pink pig. The restaurant is literally a little shack. The owner, goes by Strawberry, has a snoke house in back and he creates the best pulled pork sandwiches we've ever tasted. It's a must if you like that kind of thing. From Website: Praised by Bon Appetite, Food Network, Food & Wine, Leisure, National Geographic, North Carolina Life, Maxim/Anthony Bourdain, Mountain Homes, Philly Enquirer, Washington Post, Nelson County Life and many others! Whether it be the classic Pork Barbeque with slaw or the Turkey Croissant with the works (Lettuce, Tomato, Cheddar Cheese, Mayo, and our special Dill Sauce), this quaint establishment will always keep you coming back for your Blue Ridge Pig fix. All of our meats are smoked on-site behind the restaurant by none other than Strawberry Goodwin himself. Every one of our recipes is unique, not only to the local area, but also to the entire east coast. The only way to experience this one-of-a-kind hog heaven is to stop by and check it out for yourself!

Great Brewery and Good Food. From Website: Set in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia, Blue Mountain opened in 2007 as the region’s first rural brewery. Today, we’re still focused on making an inspired range of the highest-quality beers that can be enjoyed at our two locations in beautiful Nelson County, or in bottles and cans throughout Virginia and beyond.

Great place From Website Located on the famed beverage corridor along Rt. 151 in Nelson County, the flagship Bold Rock Cider Barn opened in August 2014 and represents our company headquarters, center of operations and primary cider production facility. The ‘Chapel of Apple’ as it is affectionately known is a beautifully rustic timber framed barn overlooking the Rockfish River. Our staff will be happy to explain the process behind our award winning craft hard cider and following a tasting, enjoy a pint, flight or delicious food from our Feed Room.
