This is a neighborhood with ancient origins: it was founded in ancient Roman Empire because it was very close to the river “Tevere”. On the river Rome had its first harbor of the city which was located close to the the “Isola Tiberina”. The name “Trastevere” comes from the fact that this neighborhood was located “on the other side” of the river Tevere and not on the side of the proper city of Rome. In Latin “trans Teberim” means on the other side of the “Tevere”, hence the name “Trastevere.” The neighborhood is heaven for people who like to walk because many areas have limited access to cars. You will be walking on medieval cobblestone ("Sanpietrini") alleys that still carry the mystery of the past. These streets with its characteristic medieval houses were populated for centuries by artisans, artists, musicians, and poets.
