Our Visitor Centre below Caban Coch Dam is a good place to learn about the remarkable building of the dams and the alternative ways to explore. There is a gift shop with useful maps, local produce and mementos of Elan. We also have a spacious cafe alongside the River Elan which serves homemade snacks and meals.
If you are interested in coming as part of a larger group by coach it is always worth getting in touch ahead of your visit. We are always pleased to welcome groups, and have dedicated Rangers who will make sure you have a visit to remember.
Dogs: We welcome well behaved dogs into our Visitor Centre, this includes the exhibition area, shop and café (initially a designated area will be identified for this).

Our Visitor Centre below Caban Coch Dam is a good place to learn about the remarkable building of the dams and the alternative ways to explore. There is a gift shop with useful maps, local produce and mementos of Elan. We also have a spacious cafe alongside the River Elan which serves homemade snacks and meals.

Aberystwyth Castle is an Edwardian fortress that was built during the First Welsh War in the late 13th century. It was begun during Edward I's first Welsh campaign at the same time as work started at Flint, Rhuddlan and Builth Wells.
Building work started in 1277. The inner ward was built in a diamond-shaped concentric castle, with a twin D-shaped gatehouse keep with mural towers at each corner. The outer ward consisted of twin D-shaped gatehouse, a barbican, a rock-cut ditch and a large curtain wall with towers.
Marcher lord Gilbert de Clare built an earlier Motte and bailey castle a mile south of the current site in c.1110. It was called Castell Tan-y-castell, Aberrheidol Castle and Old Aberystwyth. The earth and timber castle was later reinforced with stone. The castle was captured by Owain Gwynedd in 1136: it then changed hands at least three more times before being capturedl by the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great in 1221. Llywelyn razed this castle and built another one in its place.
Aberystwyth Castle had not yet been completed when the Welsh briefly captured and burned it in 1282. Later work was overseen by master mason James of St George. Construction ceased in 1289. The castle was subjected to a lengthy siege during the revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294-5.
By 1307 a town was thriving outside the castle walls; its Welsh name was Llanbadarn Gaerog (English: Fortified Llanbadarn). However historical accounts suggest that the castle had already begun to fall into disrepair by 1343.
During the national uprising led by Owain Glyndŵr, the Welsh took possession of the castle in 1404. But the English had recaptured the castle by 1408. In 1637 Aberystwyth Castle was designated as a Royal mint by Charles I, and produced silver shillings. The mint's operator raised a regiment of Royalist soldiers during the English Civil War. Oliver Cromwell slighted the castle in 1649.

They have one of the prettiest steam locomotives in Wales, specially built in 2005 to a classic Kerr, Stuart and Company design. On a 50-minute round trip, it puffs through the former slate-mining region between Corris and Maespoeth, stopping for a tour of the engine shed and workshops.

Follow the trails to explore the lowland wet grasslands, reedbed, and saltmarsh habitats.
Ynyslas has three stunning miles of golden beach stretching from Borth in the south to the sand dunes in the north. It is a majestic spot for walking and exploring. The dunes are home to a rick population of orchids, mosses, liverworts, fungi, insects and spiders, many of these species are rare and some are unknown elsewhere in Britain.

Ynyslas
Ynyslas has three stunning miles of golden beach stretching from Borth in the south to the sand dunes in the north. It is a majestic spot for walking and exploring. The dunes are home to a rick population of orchids, mosses, liverworts, fungi, insects and spiders, many of these species are rare and some are unknown elsewhere in Britain.
Look out for a prehistoric forest which was buried under water and sand more than 4,500 years ago has been uncovered by Storm Hannah.
The petrified trees lie between Ynyslas and Borth.
The forest has become associated with a 17th Century myth of a sunken civilisation known as 'Cantre'r Gwaelod', or the 'Sunken Hundred'.
It is believed the area was a once-fertile land and township protected by floodgates.
The remains of the forest's trees, preserved in the local peat, have been exposed by low tides and high winds.

Glaslyn is Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust’s biggest nature reserve, an integral part of the Cambrian Mountains. The large expanse of heather moorland, with its associated boggy areas, surround an exposed upland lake. Spectacular views can be enjoyed from the viewpoint.
Best time to visit:
Glaslyn can be breathtaking at any time of year, but don’t miss July/August, when the reserve turns purple with the flowering heather. Also look out for the lake’s speciality, quillwort, which often washes up on the lake shore after bad weather.
