The site of NZ's worst rail disaster. This is about a ten minute drive from Ohakune towards Waiouru. Great information panels and very short walk to view the site where the train plunged into the lahar filled river.

An approximate 40 minute drive south of Ohakune will get you to Pipiriki, the terminus of the River Road which leads to Whanganui. Indulge in the history of the river on a jet boat tour. It is about a 3 km walk into the bush on a well graded track to reach the famous Bridge to Nowhere. Great book on this location is The Ballot Farm by Lily Ennis.
