Food scene

Best restaurant in Stavoren. It gets crowded in season, so book early, in particular if you want to sit outside. If it is warm, try and ask for a space in the shade. De Koebrug has its own smokehouse, and a Scotland oriented kitchen. It also has a huge Scottish whisky collection, and quite a few Scottish beers. Friendly and consistent service, as this is a family-run restaurant. https://www.dekoebrug.nl/

It will take about an hour by car to get there, but you won't regret spending that time. In terms of food this could be the best restaurant in Frisia. Been there a few times now.

Sightseeing

If you like walking: walk for two hours to Hindeloopen via the dike. There will be some easy to climb fences on your path (to keep the grazing sheep in their sections). Great views, and you will pass both a bird sanctuary and a White Elephant ... Hindeloopen itself is utterly charming yet very compact. You could of course also get there by car or by bike.

This is the best beach in Stavoren city. Shallow water for hundreds of meters. Also a good spot to work on your tan. Walking over the dike from your apartment to the beach is a nice experience all by itself, with curious sheep all around ;-)

Great terrace, and a nice spot on your way to Suderstrand - or on your return.

A bit further south than Stavoren beach, but a lot quieter, and more scenic.

When it is sunny and not too windy, this will make for a great day trip to Enkhuizen. Make certain to board early, so you can get a seat on the upper deck in the front section of the ferry. Limited seating there, but the best experience.

Nice view, from an elevation created in the last ice age. Also has a monument for the battle of Warns (1345). Apparently, the Frisians preferred to die in that battle rather than be slaves.

Brilliant by itself, but in particular for a rainy day. Amazing how this Eise, son of a farmer, could build this in the 18th century. Bonus: Franeker is a nice city too.

Another good one for a rainy day. A painter of common objects for the common man. Also amusing: Jopie's fight against the municipality who wanted to raise tax on entrance tickets.

For those of you that like to play a round. Takes 20 mins by car to get there. According to the club itself, the most beautiful natural course in the Netherlands. Who am I to disagree? https://golfclubgaasterland.nl/home

Sports

If you want to play, you can rent a court at the VVV office (next to the large fish in the old harbor) for about EUR 15 per hour. The court is about three minutes from the VVV.
