City/town information

Birgu (or Vittoriosa) is a very old locality with its origins reaching back to medieval times. Prior to the establishment of Valletta as capital and main city of Malta, military powers that wanted to rule the Maltese islands would need to obtain control of Birgu due to its significant position in the Grand Harbour. In fact, it served as the base of the Order of Saint John and de facto capital city of Malta from 1530 to 1571. Birgu is well known for its vital role in the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. Walking in the old streets of Birgu and along the Marina is very nice in the day as well as in the evening. It is a 400 meter-walk away from our Palazetto.

Mdina is a fortified city in the Northern Region of Malta which served as the island's capital from antiquity to the medieval period. It adopted its present name, which derives from the Arabic word medina during the Arab occupation of Malta. The city remained the capital of Malta throughout the Middle Ages, until the arrival of the Order of St. John in 1530, when Birgu became the administrative centre of the island. Mdina experienced a period of decline over the following centuries, although it saw a revival in the early 18th century. At this point, it acquired several Baroque features, although it did not lose its medieval character. Mdina is 14 km away from our Palazetto. You can spend half a day there.

After the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights set about an ambitious project, the building of Valletta, a city built both as a fortress to defend Christendom and as a cultural masterpiece. Valetta is a unique example of the Baroque. From our Palazetto, you can walk down to the harbour in 5 minutes and take a ferry to go to Valetta in 10 minutes or a small traditionnal Maltese luzzu boat in wood from the Arch at the entrance of the Marina of Vittoriosa (Birgu).

St John's Co-Cathedral is a Roman Catholic co-cathedral in Valletta, Malta, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It was built by the Order of St. John between 1572 and 1577. In the 17th century, its interior was redecorated in the Baroque style. The painting depicting The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist (1608) by Caravaggio (1571–1610) is the most famous work in the church. Considered one of Caravaggio's masterpieces, the largest canvas he painted and the only painting signed by the painter, the canvas is displayed in the Oratory for which it was painted. Restored in the late 1990s in Florence, this painting is one of Caravaggio's most impressive uses of the chiaroscuro style for which he is most famous with a circle of light illuminating the scene of St John's beheading at the request of Salome. The oratory also houses Caravaggio's Saint Jerome Writing (1607–1608).

Two kinds of boats to go to Valetta

From our Palazetto, you can walk down to the harbour in 5 minutes and take a ferry to go to Valetta in 10 minutes or a small traditionnal Maltese wooden boat (“Id-dghajsa tal-pass” which looks like the Venetian gondola) from the Arch at the entrance of the Marina of Vittoriosa (Birgu).
