The old railroad grade has been made into a wonderful trail that runs from Glenwood Springs to Aspen. From Carbondale, head towards Aspen for a great ride along the river (about 3 miles out of town) away from roads. There is also a nice short trail that goes up the Crystal River (Hwy 133) to the KOA Campground.

Parks & Nature

Also known locally as "Mushroom Rock," this is a great way to get a little altitude and orient yourself above the confluence of the Crystal and Roaring Fork Rivers with majestic Sopris front and center. Hike up through the red rock of the Maroon Formation and Pinyon/Juniper forest. On the north side of Hwy 82, at the Hwy 133 intersection, is a parking area. Walk a little ways up the road until you see the trail sign on your right.
