Pasjača beach is situated in the Konavle municipality, below the village of Popovići, about 12 km from the town of Cavtat chosen as one of the 10 European Best Destinations for 2019. Pasjača beach represents the harmony between man and nature. It was created in 1955, after the construction of a tunnel leading to the sea. The excavated rocks were left on the shore, and in only a few years the waves transformed them into a beach filled with fine sand. This is the origin of the beautiful beach at the foot of the majestic cliffs of Konavle, which has been named the best European beach of 2019 by the European Best Destinations portal. You need to take a steep path and steps carved into the cliffs to get to the beach, and in some places the path also leads you through carved tunnels. This tiny, difficult-to-reach oasis and the turquoise sea at the foot of the harsh cliffs of Konavle offer plenty of beautiful viewpoints that will make for wonderful photographs. It is no surprise then that #Pasjača is often trending on social media sites. There are no amenities at Pasjača beach, making it perfect for those who are looking for a quiet place to relax, surrounded by beautiful nature and crystal-clear sea. However, since there is a difference in elevation of about 200 m between the cliffs and the beach, getting in and out is an adventure in and of itself, so a visit to Pasjača is not recommended to those who may have difficulty with this kind of steep climb.

All day boat trip You can visit Koločep, Lopud and Sipan Island in one day. The Island of Koločep is the one closest to Dubrovnik. The settlements Gornje Čelo and Donje Čelo are situated in the two largest bays. The eastern and western parts of the island are covered with thick pine woods stretching as far as the sea rocks. The crystal azure sea abounds with fish and shellfish. The dwellers of Koločep used to be the best-known coral divers in the Mediterranean, but today they seldom dive and only for pleasure. Numerous monuments including the remains of sarcophaguses, stone sculptures, chapels and churches show that the island was inhabited in the time of antiquity. Already the first encounter with Kalamota, as the people of Dubrovnik nick-name the Island of Koločep, will not leave you indifferent. You will be intoxicated by its deafening silence, the scent of the Mediterranean herbs and pines, and the blueness of the sea that washes its sandy beaches. The one standing in the middle is the Island of Lopud, which abounds with beautiful sandy beaches. A boat will take you to the settlement of the same name, from where you can walk to the unique sandy Bay of Šunj on the opposite side of the island. Šunj is a well-known sandy beach, of which one part is reserved for naturists. Nature is not the only one who was generous to Lopud. The island also abounds with forts, little churches, summer residences and monasteries housing valuable works of art. The biggest and most inhabited, the Island of Šipan has a large number of vineyards and olive groves. The two biggest settlements are Šipanska Luka and Suđurađ. The inner side of the island abounds with shelters and natural anchorages of immense beauty, where the branches of pine trees reach the surface of the sea. In this small area there is a huge number of monuments, more than thirty churches, several monasteries and about sixty summer residences in gothic-renaissance style. The island dwellers are well-known for their hospitality. They will be happy to take you fishing and into the field, and will offer you healthy food and excellent wines from their fruit-bearing vineyards. You can reach the Elafite Islands by a boat departing from Cavtat Harbour ( I can help you with the tickets).

City/town information

There are many beautiful places in the world, however the people of Dubrovnik claim their city to be the most beautiful. A warm southern climate, spacious blue skies, emerald green and dark blue crystal-clear sea touching the rocky shore and spilling into numerous coves and bays, onto sandy beaches and steep reefs decorated with the lushest Mediterranean and subtropical flora. The City of Dubrovnik is under UNESCO protection. According to records, the area around Dubrovnik was first inhabited somewhere between 6000 and 2000 BC. The existence of the city was lost in the cloudy course of history, with legend and historical facts being meshed together. The lack of any preserved documents makes the whole pinpointing process harder, and the few historians that are researching this topic are left with the task to distinguish fact from fiction. What is certain is that Dubrovnik is an old city, persevering on its stony cliffs for at least 14 centuries. An even older city, Epidaurum, predates Dubrovnik, being located where the city of Cavtat now lies, about 18 kilometres southeast of Dubrovnik. At the time of its destruction it had endured for at least 10 to 12 centuries. Again, historians cannot be sure. Some believe that the Greeks founded the colony around 600BC. With the city destroyed, a number of its inhabitants fled to neighbouring regions (today’s Župa Dubrovačka), where the fortified cities of Spilan and Gradac (Burnum) were inhabited, as well as the rocky islet of Laus, which became the first city core of old Dubrovnik. The rapid settlement of Laus resulted in the development of a new city, today’s Dubrovnik (in the 7th century) which would, on that small rocky area, grow deep roots and build a glorious and heroic history in the stormy centuries to follow. During the 7th century, the Slavic tribes, with Croats being one of the superior ones, had already set up permanent residences along the majority of the eastern Adriatic coast, with the exception of a few fortified Roman cities, which were becoming cut off from the rest of the empire in the wake of this rapid Slavic population. In comparison to the development of cities with a Roman population, a settlement was developing near Ragusium, at the foothills of Mount Srđ, which received the Croatian name Dubrovnik. The name came from the oak forests which even today are called “dubrave” today. During the 10th and 11th century, the sea strait between the two settlements became shallower due to alleviation, drying up completely at the end. When the two settlements, already joined together, were fortified and strengthened within the same city walls at the end of 12th century, the result was the Old Town of Dubrovnik, an urban centre preserved to the present day.

This coastal town enchants with a beautiful old town, where lovely places, such as historic town palaces, churches and museums are located. However, a real highlight are the wonderful beaches and idyllic bays, which are not far from the center. Also unique is the romantic harbor with the lively waterfront promenade. It connects the town center with the numerous restaurants, cafés and stores with the picturesque bays. The area around Cavtat is stunning and also offers plenty of attractions worth seeing.
