Villas del Mar Beach Resort is located in the coastal town of Loiza. This town is known for its rich Afro-Puerto Rican legacy and culture. In fact, Loiza is widely recognized as one of the birthplaces of the traditional musical genre known as Bomba y Plena. During the month of July, Loizeños get together to celebrate St. James Day. This festival is characterized by a parade where performers dance while wearing vegigante masks, a mask made from coconuts and painted with bright colors. It is a sight to be seen! Loiza is also known for the beach side community of Piñones, about a 15 minutes drive. Here you will find THE BEST frituras (fritters and fried turnovers) on the island. There are also many fresh seafood restaurants and “Kioskos” selling chicken and pork skewers. Two of the most popular kioskos are Kiosko La Comay and Kiosko El Boricua, both within 20 minutes driving distance. Piñones is also known for its beautiful beaches, which range from calm and shallow waters such as the “La Posita” beach to the surfers playground beach of Aviones. If hiking, bird watching and enjoying a nice swim in the crystal clear and cool waters of a tropical river is your thing, then only 10 miles away is the entrance to the only tropical rainforest within the US National Forest System, namely El Yunque. Here you will find attractions such as el Portal Visitor Center and Hacienda Carabali. Things to do include swimming, hiking, ziplining, horseback riding and atv tours.
