Sightseeing

The staff and the animals here are friendly. It’s amazing to have a monitor or Tasmanian Devil or Cassowary come to the fence or the glass to get a closer look at the visitor. There are some hilly areas so it might be difficult for people with mobility issues. The animal experiences are amazing and fascinating. It’s worth the $4 for kangaroo food to have the animals gently eating from your hand

The park is a great outdoor place for children. There are great places under shade with free BBQ and picnic tables. Lots of green space. Bring some bread and feed the ducks in the lake. Great play equipment - safe, educational and plenty of room

The grand Maryborough Railway Station was meant to be built in Maryborough Queensland but the plans were mixed up. It is a sight to behold. There is a wonderful cafe/bar which is open Wednesday to Sunday up till 3pm. Also a tourist information/gift shop. It’s a pleasant train ride through some lovely old railway stations or about an hour’s drive

This pretty little village is about 30 minutes drive from Ballarat. Along the way you will go under the Arch of Victory and along most of the 22km long Avenue of Honour. You will turn off just before the WW1 Memorial Bridge though you may choose to stop there as it’s a very interesting memorial. Beaufort has a couple of good pubs and 3 or 4 good cafes. My personal favourite is The Pyrenees Pantry in the Main Street. There are 2 antique stores and an art gallery at the still operating Railway Station. The town is known for its steam festival

There is a bronze bust of every prime minister from Barton up to the previous prime minister to the current one . They don’t have a bust of them put up until their term in office is completed - however short or long their term may be or seem to be!

These beautiful old gardens are extremely well maintained and have something to offer all year round. There are both old and contemporary features. There is a little cottage that was once lived in by one of Australia’s greatest poets - Adam Lindsay Gordon - these days it sells arts and crafts made by locals. The gardens themselves are stunning and the friendly gardeners are always happy to inform and advise

There is a 6km walking track around the lake called the Steve Moneghetti Track named after the Ballarat born World Champion long distance runner. It’s all flat and mostly paved. My favourite time to walk the track is near sunset
