The walled hilltop town of Volterra will enchant you! It’s a fun day trip with quite a few things to see and the views are amazing. Also, the enormous Medici Fortress looks out over Volterra and the surrounding countryside. This massive building is visible from miles away and characterizes the skyline of the hill upon which the city lies. The Fortress was built in 1474, exactly two years after Florence conquered Volterra following a fierce battle over the control of nearby alum mines, an important mineral used in the production of textiles.

The lovely village of Lajatico is a Tuscan charmer with a pretty town center set amidst the cultivated hills between Pisa and Volterra. As you walk around the picturesque streets, you'll see lots of photos and posters of Andrea Bocelli. Lajatico has more than a mild devotion to the internationally acclaimed tenor - they adore him, because this is his hometown. In fact, despite Lajatico's long and impressive history as a Medici seat and a strategic town at the border of the territories of Pisa and Florence, it became famous only in recent years, because of Bocelli.

Site Seeing

Bolgheri, a town for wine lovers that is close to the ocean.
I definitely suggest a drive along the famous Viale dei Cipressi (Cypress Avenue) that leads to Bolgheri. This is a scenic, straight avenue, about 5 km long, bordered by majestic and ancient cypresses which end in front of the castle of Bolgheri. It connects the old Via Aurelia to the village. This very impressive path is celebrated by one of the major Italian poets of the nineteenth century, Giosuè Carducci, in his famous poems “Davanti San Guido” (In front of San Guido). The poet was very devoted to Bolgheri and its surrounding as he spent part of his youth here.
