Laid out in the 18th century as a private park at the centre of one of Dublin's most fashionable neighbourhoods, the park fell into neglect during the 20th century. The area around the square reached a low point in the middle of the century, when property developers wanted to tear down most of the townhouses and replace them with office blocks; architectural enthusiasts, local residents and the Guinness family managed to block it. A recent influx of foreign students and professionals has brought a new vitality to this architecturally beautiful part of Dublin. The film Once was shot in and around the square.

Funny little pond in the centre of Dublin. Many Dubliners don't know that it exists. An old reservoir that's know just a duck pond. Good place for a conversation with yourself. There's the odd group of alcoholics sitting on the benches, but definitely safe during the day.

The third largest stadium in Europe and home to the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). The stadium has been the venue for important events in Irish history. There are games of Hurling, Camogie and Gaelic football on most weekends during the summer months and occasional concerts. There's also a walkway above the stadium which offers views across Dublin Bay.

The food is quite good and the dingy beer garden out the back often has the vibe of a slightly out of control house party. Not to everyone's taste.

James Joyce was enrolled here towards the end of the 19th century. It leads down to Parnell Street where you can catch the LUAS (tram) across town (from December 2017).

The most upmarket shopping street in Dublin. The city doesn't have a large number of boutiques but most of the fanciest stores are in or around Grafton Street. You'll find the Brown Thomas department store here, which is Dublin's answer to Macy's, I guess!
