It is of course the must see when visiting Carcassonne. During the summer try visiting before 1030 and after 1900. After dark the atmosphere becomes almost mystical. Walking between the inner and outer walls gives you a real impression of the size and layers of history of la cité. See if you can spot the unique tower with a chimney (one of the 52).
