It was founded in 1854 and opened its doors ten years later. The Gallery has an extensive, representative collection of Irish painting and is also notable for its Italian Baroque and Dutch masters painting. The current director of the gallery is Raymond Keaveney. Entry to the gallery is free.

A wonderful gallery with great contemporary and older art. Recently refurbished, it's beautiful to walk around. The portrait gallery is excellent. Has a good Cafe and gift shop also. This is also a great area for The natural history museum, Trinity college, Merrion square and not far from Stephens…
