Located just off the Via Laietana in the neighbourhood of El Born, the church of Santa Maria del Mar is a Catalan Gothic basilica that has existed in some form since at least the 10th century. Among residents, it is sometimes referred to as ‘the church of the poor’ or ‘the church of the common man’, in contrast with the aforementioned cathedral, which was attended by the city’s wealthier citizens.

Basilica Santa Maria Del Mar The first mention of the Santa Maria del Mar was in 998, yet as you can see when you visit the basilica, the cornerstone was laid in 1329. The style is a perfect example of 14th century Catalan Gothic and the temple is seen as an icon for Catalan Gothic. It´s situated in the middle of the little, cozy streets of El Born, la Ribera area. Especially the inside is really impressive, imagine it took about 5000 persons to build this temple.

Beautiful church, great acoustics. Check if they have a concert on, it's worth it. Also try one of their guided tours which give you access to the roof and provide a lot of information about the fascinating history of this building.
