The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important and best preserved of Roman churches dedicated to the Madonna. It rises on top of the Esquiline Hill and is the only remaining example of early Christian architecture, even though it has over time been further embellished.

“Defined as the "mother of all the churches in the world", the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano represents the ideal trait d’union between the pagan era and the Christian era. Born, in fact, as a building for public meetings and for the administration of justice, with the spread of the new creed it is transformed into a majestic ecclesiastical structure, suitable for hosting a large number of faithful. The Basilica stands on the same site as the basilica built by Constantine, around 314, on land formerly owned by the noble Lateran family, from which the whole area takes its name. Repeatedly damaged and restored, the basilica was continuously enriched over the centuries. The facade, built between 1732 and 1735 by Alessandro Galilei, is a prelude to the magnificent interior designed by Borromini, to which Pope Innocenzo X Pamphilj, in view of the Jubilee of 1650, entrusted the reconstruction. The overall layout with five naves was nevertheless preserved. Inside, the original apse mosaic, by Jacopo Torriti, made for the Jubilee of 1300, has been replaced with a modern copy, while the sixteenth-century coffered ceiling of the median nave is preserved; finally, between 1884 and 1886, the presbytery and apse were completely rebuilt. If you are here, the museum is certainly worth a visit, which contains precious liturgical furnishings, and the cloister, a masterpiece of Cosmatesque art where architectural elements, sculptures and ornaments of the ancient basilica are preserved.”

“As is evidenced from their slogan, “L’arte del pane” (the art of bread), it is obvious that Panella takes their business seriously. For almost 100 years they have served freshly baked treats on the Esquiline Hill. Panella still operates as a traditional bakery, but they have expanded their menu to offer breakfast service with coffee and pastries; a rotating lunch menu that includes pasta, meat and fish; and wine and cocktails in the evening.”
