Food Scene

My favorite restaurant in the city, Michelin-starred and James Beard winner. Roman small plates - always incredible food and service. Excellent Italian wines by the glass. Hard to get in, try and reserve early. The cookbook is displayed in our kitchen if you want to have a look at some of their dishes - or attempt to whip them up yourself!

It's the best pizza in town, arguably some of the best you will get this side of Naples:) The main restaurant Delfina is in the Mission district (hard to get in) but they also have two pizzerias, one right next to their main restaurant and the other right outside our door! Down one block at Fillmore and California St., across from Mollie Stone's Grocery Store. Get the margherita DOP pizza and prepare to make inappropriate moaning sounds.

My favorite Chinese food in the city, in Chinatown proper - also happens to be Jackie Chan's go-to when in SF, and was one of the restaurants featured in Bourdain's SF episode (RIP Anthony, we love you so) It's hard to get in, go during the day or call to book. I love the R&G beef, so delicious..

The best coffee in the neighborhood, some argue it's the best coffee out there anywhere! Up the street on Fillmore just a few blocks. Other favorite coffee in SF (which San Franciscans take stupidly seriously): The Mill on Divisadero (great pizza, pastries and bread too - they use Four Barrel Coffee), Ritual Coffee (different locations around town), Equator is my very favorite - one in Fort Mason on the Marina Waterfront and another downtown somewhere.

Our favorite Ramen restaurant in SF. It's inside Japantown - through the main doors on Post Street and right inside on the left. Great ramen/udon, etc. - inexpensive and delicious! See a movie at the AMC/Kabuki movie theater just next door

Best deli in SF, traditional Italian. Pick up some sandwiches/salads here and head to Golden Gate Park for a picnic! It's down in the Marina (15 minutes over the hill on Fillmore or short Lyft ride or bus picks up right on Fillmore and will drop you)

San Franciscans love Samovars. There are a few locations, and they have just added one right here on Fillmore Street! Walk down Fillmore a few blocks on the opposite side of the street - excellent teas, food. It's small and crowded but delicious.

Our favorite tacos in the city! In the Mission District - make sure to leave time to walk around the Mission for some prime people-watching, a Delores Park Saturday, or just because. The Mission is nutty and very much alive!!

It's James Beard/Michelin. Very hard to get in but I'm told if you get there at 4ish and wait, you have a good chance. A foodie haven and just down the street on Fillmore, about 7 blocks - I don't go as I don't have time like that but people obsess over this place and since it's in the neighborhood, is worth the mention!

The sister restaurant to Michelin-starred State Bird Provisions, just beside it. Great food and drinks - a really lively bar scene too. Lively as in packed so be prepared for that:) Lots of San Franciscans freak out over this place, you will be amongst locals!

Brunch in SF is insane, let's just get that out of the way. There are tons of excellent, incredible brunch restaurants throughout the city as brunching is a way of life for a lot of San Franciscans. The problem with this is that on the weekends you will wait 1-2 hours to eat anywhere good (unless you go early/before 10 - might still be a wait though). There are too many great brunch places to list, but if you just want to be fed in the morning, Joe the Juice right outside the door is a good option for a quick bite/smoothie/juices. It's a chain but it's fine and will get you on your way:)

Drinks & Nightlife

My favorite bar in the city. It's old skool, named after the 4 founding fathers of San Francisco ("The Big 4"). It's dimly lit, lots of leather furniture, classically decorated and often a piano player is featured in the lounge. Elegant, historic and delicious food and drinks. You'll feel like a grown up here, but in the best of ways:)

The Mission has it all, night and day. The "it" spot where hipsters, Hispanic communities and techies collide. Tons of inexpensive ethnic and spendy trendy restaurants, clubs, bars, shops, etc. Best Mexican food in the city are all in the Mission, our favorite for tacos: La Taqueria - cheap and real tasty!

You can think of this venue as "the other Fillmore":) This is another show venue - we are equidistant between The Fillmore and The Independent (on Divisadero - 30 min walk or short Lyft) Check who's on at both venues and take your pick!

Sightseeing

Built for SF's World's Fair. Beautiful spot in San Fran, bring your camera. It gets incredibly touristy on weekend days (wedding pictures, etc.) - we recommend running/walking down there (20-30 mins) on a weekday morning to get it relatively to yourself. Swans on ponds and greek columns and flowers and gorgeousness.

We love our Chinatown! It's touristy, but a touristy area we actually like (we don't go to Ghiardelli Square/Fisherman's Wharf or Pier 39 FYI - San Franciscans don't do that stuff. They say if you want to have an affair, have it at Pier 39 because no one who actually lives in SF will ever see you;) Plenty of things to see - shops and restaurants, etc. My favorite Chinese restaurant here is called the R&G Lounge on Kearny. Hard to get in, book ahead

Essentials

Right around the corner! Take a right out on the street, a right on Fillmore and another right on California. You'll see it right there. It's overpriced, but very convenient. Otherwise, there is a Whole Foods at California/Polk but will probably require a Lyft.

Shopping

The Ferry Building Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings is an institution for both locals and tourists. The outdoor farmer's market is open from 8am - 2pm and the food trucks that surround it keep similar hours (SF is obsessed with the tamales, you'll see the line at the truck!) The Ferry Building itself is home to a ton of gourmet shops - meats, cheeses, olive oils, etc. etc. Take the 1 bus just in front of FRAME on Fillmore (the bus picks up on the side of the store, on Sacramento St.) all the way to the end and you'll be at the Embarcadero, where the Ferry Building lives. The 1 bus also goes through Chinatown if you want to get on/off there along the way.

Arts & Culture

My favorite museum in the city, not only for its collection (which is incredible, European art) but the building itself is gorgeous, modeled after the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris and donated by the (in)famous Alma Spreckles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alma_de_Bretteville_Spreckels The location is exquisite, you will get views of the Golden Gate bridge and the Bay. If you buy a ticket at either the DeYoung or the Legion of Honor Museums, your ticket will get you into the other museum if used on the same day. I recommend doing one museum day and doing both

Because it's incredible. SF just unveiled the new building - the permanent collection is badass (Warhol, Rothoko, DuChamp, etc.) and their exhibits are world class. The famous Kabuki spa is just down the street! Access to the baths (they alternate men and women days - check their website) is inexpensive (~$25) and so relaxing. Their treatments are fairly priced.
