4 miles from Windermere, Amblesidecan be travelled to be boat, bus, car or those who like a challenge, across the mountains. Amblesideis vibrant small town, has a roman settlement remains, waterfalls, mountain hikes, cafes and shops. More sleepy in the evenings than Bowness however a must visit

If you're a keen runner, the Lake District is an amazing place to head, and this guidebook from Cicerone is the best (I wrote it!). It's available from Amazon, or it's widely stocked in Ambleside (Fred's Bookshop, Climbers Shop, Gaynors, etc).

Ambleside is an hour away and has great lakeside walks. We love to do an adventure that involves taking the boat across from Ambleside to Wray Castle, walk from the castle along the shore of the lake to the car ferry across to Bowness, then take the open top bus back to Ambleside. The kids love the variety, although it’s a long walk along the shore for little legs
