176,000 acres with exceptionally beautiful hiking throughout including several loops of varying lengths at Sand Canyon. Drive 10 miles from Cortez to Canyon of Ancients National Monument, where (even if Visitor Center is closed) you can walk on a wide, cement sidewalk to exceptional 360 degree views of McPhee Lake and mountain ranges in several directions and visit the Escslante Pueblo cultural site. If Visitor Center is open, get maps and tips to locate other cultural sights you can drive to and hike or bike to explore. Check website for days and hours of operation.

Beautiful hikes and ruins to explore. Great to hike early in the summer or anytime in the spring or fall.
Wonderful hiking and not too far to drive. Warm and sunny, red rock and Ancestral Puebloan sites. Love this place!!!
EVERYONE LOVES Mesa Verde, but have you heard of The Canyon of the Ancients? It is a group of Native American Pueblos in 170,000 acres of high desert. This map is a collection of the three main attractions as well as the heritage center. The Anasazi Heritage Center is a great (free) visitor spot to view some of the greatest collections of artifacts from this area. The recommended locations below include petroglyphs, remains of villages, and faint rock paintings.
